BUNGLING Post Office chiefs have apologised after warning a Scunthorpe pensioner to keep his dog under control - even though it died 31 years ago.

Retired steelworker Bert Major, 79, thought he had gone barking mad when he received a letter from the Scunthorpe Royal Mail delivery office warning that 'a potential animal hazard' in their home could impact on the delivery of their mail.

Bert, who lives on Cemetery Road with his wife Ann, said: "We did have a dog, but sadly he died 31 years ago."

The letter suggested they should either install a wire cage behind the letterbox or keep their 'dog' isolated from the delivery point or arrange an alternative delivery point.

Mr Major said: "I told the Royal Mail we did have a pet Corgi called Sandy, but he died aged 18 years old in 1979.

"He's buried under the greenhouse so he's not forgotten.

"I was a bit upset when I received the letter - but now I can see the funny side of it all.

"The wife and I keep joking about whose turn it is to take the dog for a walk!"

Royal Mail bosses in Manchester have promised an inquiry into how and why the letters were sent and have apologised to Mr and Mrs Major.

A spokeswoman said: "As part of a local initiative in Scunthorpe, a small number of customers were sent letters from a delivery office referring to potential concerns with their dogs and this did include a letter in error to Mr Major."

(A politcian about another politician I seem to recall vaguely.)

Sadly Sandy the corgi passed away 1979 aged 18. Its about right the RM have finally got round to investigating the matter. Only about 30 years two late.

It is obvious that Sandy the long departed corgi was a problem to delivery posties when it was alive hence referring to potential concerns with their dogs but clearly utter folly on Royal Mail's Scunthorpes part for not keeping their list of potential dangerous dogs up to date.

Why don't YOU get a life dude, slagging off some guy you never met because he got a letter reminding him of a dead friend. When you loose something or someone close to you come back and tell us how you feel.

On the one hand I am loathe to give out personal details.
On the other - When you lose someone close to you.......

My mum died of cancer when I was 21. Long, drawn out, awful.
One of my brothers died in an RTA two years later.
More recently one of my sisters died of cancer in almost exactly the same way as our mum did.
My dad died,relatively peacefully in his early eighties and then my other sister died after a stroke due to complications after a kidney transplant failure.
Believe me, I know what it is like to lose someone close to you.
But this old boy didn't lose someONE he lost someTHING.If in your head you cannot make that distinction then there is something seriously wrong in your life.
He didn't get a letter about a dead FRIEND, he got a letter about a dead DOG.
Or do you think it would be acceptable to console a colleague who has just lost a child to meningitis with: I know how you must feel, we've just lost our pet rabbit?
Get real and then get a life.

The problem you have with this guys sadness is down to you seeing animals as 'lesser' beings than people and therefore you see human-animal relationships as less important that a human-human ones. THAT'S AN OPINION. It's your opinion, but that doesn't make it a reality in someone elses life, OR a matter of fact. You're saying I need to get 'real', but there's not much more 'real' in this world than a bond based on genuine friendship, pure unquestioning acceptance, trust beyond reason, loyalty and a shared life. That's what this guy is sad about. What do you think gives you the right to slag him down for it???

Live your own life fella and suffer your own losses but don't be so arrogant as to belittle other peoples sadness and loss just because you don't understand or relate to it or becaue you think your own is more important.

better to have a go at RM and their institutionalised stupidity - not many organisations are capable of something like this

Most of us must be aware of what RM are capable of. This is par for the course, 30 years out of date notices. Manager responsible was probablly off on long-term sick. The H&S walk log thing must also have been 30years over due too. :cfo :lfo
