If the new machines can't get the mail out quickly enough then buy more or better machines. Royal Mail must not be allowed to slash jobs and provide a worse service (ie later deliveries) which is what is currently being proposed. At a time of very high unemployment they are planning to force thousands of extra people onto the dole whilst spending millions on importing machines to replace them which are not going to do the job as well - absolute madness. The union should be getting this message across to the general public.

Similarly the DSA fiasco should be publicised. A few old farts talking about it in the House of Lords is no good. Billy and Dave should be screaming to the world that the DSA companies are robbing us blind. It is time Billy was reprogramed to stop saying, "Privatise the profit and nationalise the debt" and start saying, "The DSA companies are stealing from Royal Mail". Let's go on strike about DSA if necessary. Once the general public realise the major beneficiaries of DSA are the banks, utility companies and foreign-owned companies such as DHL and TNT there would be uproar. Our pension and other financial problems would be rapidly reduced if the DSA price was hiked by 10 pence per item.

As for D2Ds, they have become so important to Royal Mail because lazy, short-sighted management saw them as an easy way to increase revenue without investing in infrastructure or developing our core business. To put it another way, by loading more and more onto the shoulders of our delivery people they can make good money without spending a penny on machinery. It is time to raise our standards by only accepting D2Ds that come in envelopes and so can be sorted and sequenced automatically and giving all the other stuff to the schoolkids and immigrants who are the only other people who would consider delivering them.

Unless of course Daz you were scheduled to start last in which case you may well be asking "Why do i have to start so late when everyone else starts early"
If you can truly recall the unhappiness with the 6 o clock start you will understand the anger of those members, paid the same but with worse T&Cs. :hmmmm

That's great Big Daz! Now if you can train Billy to start saying that every time he is interviewed on tv I will be a very happy man.

truth start times are an issue but not the most important issue, i want a national delivery model with a national delivery span not one office on 3.5 because they are strong and a weak one on 4.5,if we have a national span we are showing weaker offices that they can get help nationaly and not be railroaded into longer spans. And please stop treating people who question things like idiots, i know we are a nuisance to you and RM but not being as bright as you`s we need explanations

What you say would find no support amongst CWU membership in my D.O, there is no way we will support starting later than nesscary. Anything other than the earliest viable start time will be met with opposition and a continuation of members attending work early.

Make no mistake we will vigorously oppose duty start times being later than needed.
Well fortunately yours will be only one vote like ours.

While were at it why not call for every single delivery duty to be scheduled to work the same number of hours each and every day as every other delivery duty.

I would suggest instead of getting so hung up on the possibilty of different start times we concentrate on everything that happens from our start time through to our finish time, that is were we need to be looking, for greater equality and fairness.
Well it's true to say that later start times caused a furore when first implemented, however most of our members prefer it - they can have a pint the night before and watch a movie and have some semblance of family life.

Our start times vary from 0500 to 0900 and NO-ONE is allowed to leave before 10.10 a.m, everyone leaves at the same time so it is really unimportant what your start time is. This equalises in some respect BUT Park and loopers leave at the same time as town rounds one with a 3.5 delivery span and one with a 4.15 delivery span - the difference is one starts earlier than the other.

The CWU mbrs that work at my D.O do not like the later starts, there was no operational need to start a hour later.

As soon as everyone has finshed sorting their mail into the RM2000 frame its not long after that peoepl start trundling out on delivery.

Trust me you dont wanna know what time the mangers gave the call this morning. It left me  at how early it was, but it just proves regardless of the rights and wrongs of it how out of sync mail arrival times and offical start times are.

Nice One dvbuk! One start time! One delivery span! One finish time! That would focus the minds of CWU HQ and RMG. How can they both call giving a later service modernisation? We all know they will use the BS excuse of operatainal needs to excuse the fact our service is propping up DSA and giving over proffits to private firms and HQ have thrown themselves into this LIE! WE HAVE THE USO AND WE SHOULD ALL BE TREATED FAIRLY AS A GROUP AND AS UNION MEMBERS AND NOT PUNISHED FOR WHERE WE LIVE! I am getting SICK of a Union that gives more rights to some than others (seems they have FORGOTTEN what Trade Unionism is) we all pay subs and should enjoy the same rights as each other and HQ are hell bent on splitting OUR UNION as much as RMG and Government.
:Applause :Applause :Applause

We need a deal that is fair to ALL , not just those near a Mail Centre or that have a strong rep.

A lot of members will think that "greater equality and fairness" would mean ALL start times were the same for ALL delivery people.

And yes, I am hung up on this.

Im hung up on it as well!!!

Later start times are not wanted by the members in my D.O!!!

Start times that are plucked out of the air rather than based on the time the mail centre gets the mail to us is not wanted by the members in my D.O.

Lets just keep in mind here that im talking about paid up members of the CWU, who expect and want the CWU to fight to achive and maintain what I have just posted!!!!! I assume you all aggree with me they are entitled to that, otherwise what's the point of them belonging to the CWU?

We want a national agreement that says start times will be based on the reality of mail arrival times.

It is because of mail being on hand specifically walksorted way before 6am that early starts happen at my D.O, before the 6am starts only a very small minority started early. Now we have the majority of OPG's/members starting early due to start times that are not in allingment with mail arrival .

And finally I make no apologies for expressing and representing the views of the CWU members in my D.O, that is what local reps are supposed to do is it not?

Perhaps im mistaken and I should go forth and convince them of the righteousness of accepting start times that do not match up with mail arrival times. :hmmmm

The Question is Daz What will your members say if the mail arrival at your D.O is one of the latest?

Will they just shrug their shoulders and say "well at least my late start time is aligned to the mail arrival times".

Or will they say "Why do we have later start times than the D.O 15 miles south?"
