Spile the reason why the union cant agree standard start times for every where is simple when walk sequencing is deployed to your office you may be first office to have your wor sequenced or you may be the 4th or even the 5th in the que for when your work will be sequence and the walk sequencing site might be 2 miles away of 30 miles away. All of these factors will determine numerous issues within your own office and makes it impossible for a national agreement to determine.

Plus some offices have already got walks sequencing , some wont be getting it till next year so its just cant be agreed without the local knowledge of the office.

Mmm strange that, Currys / job centres / Morrisons / john lewis / DHS / toys R us.....etc.etc.etc all national companys offering a service to us Brittish people - All have standard start & finish times where're they're in Devon or Inverness

So why can't RM offer the same START / END times for a 350 + year old national service.

Why should some one in SE1 get there post AM but someone in EH10 get there post at 3PM for the same stamp price ????

NATIONAL STANDARDS ARE NEEDED

Or are you to scared to stand up to certian elements within the CWU ( maybe the mail-centre reps have too much influence in how agreements on delivery staff are made )

NATIONAL standards are NEEDED....NO GREY AREAS

WE NEED A RELIABLE GOOD SERVICE FOR ALL BRITS - WHEREVER THEY LIVE !

RM love the infighting....and your making it easy for them..........

Probably the only way they would is to make all DOs 9-5, they would probably then have some DO staff doing collections and possibly save a few full-time jobs in DOs. The biggest thing that could have an impact which affects us in MCs and will also affect DOs in terms of how early they get their work, is mail centre closures. If a mail centre closes, a DO that gets its work from that MC could find itself say 50 miles further away from the MC and so would get it's work later.

Out of this new agreement assuming the membership vote yes, then start times should be allinged to mail arrival times.

That could well mean different start times in different D.O's as they are not going to get their mail at the same time.

So if we want every D.O to get their mail at the same time thus ensuring the same start times, how do we do that?

If a CSS machine is doing 3 different D.O's as well as the large D.O its based in then one of the D.O's will be first to have their mail processed and one will be last and if they are different distances away from the D.O doing the sequnced mail then unless all mail is held back untill all 4 D.O's have their mail sequenced and the time the mail leaves is staggered to take account of diffeent distances then I cant see how here can be a one size fits all start time if there wasa policy that start times are set by mail arrival times.

The CWU members in my D.O want to start at the earliest possible viable start time that is 0530 if not earlier, but that policy was ditched as part of the 2007 deal and it was 0600 for all. Bit daft that if you ask me as it simply led to a increase in early starting due to mail not arriving a whole hour later!! Its only because work is on hand and on hand in suffiecent quanity that mbrs start early, change start time to match maill arrival and 99% of early starting gets wiped out in my D.O.

How much debate?, how much man/hours spent? Result=square root of feck all. :cuppa

I totally agree, the CWU campainged against the PSB even though it contained good stuff, they were urging MP's and lords not to support it based purley on one aspect of the PSB. Should have campaigned more for modifcation of the PSB.

CWU top brass thought they could simply stop the sell off and the government would simply carry on with the good bits.

How mistaken were they!!!!!!

Time to ballot the members EM6 full terms have not been met we be had a 10 month extension, no more i say, NEC grow some bolloks and ballot the mbrs!!! The government will not change their stance and we will go the election with the manifesto promise unfilled/broken.

Stop deluding yourselves!!!!

The time for hoping is over the time for action is NOW!!!!

I think I have heard it all now ,we want national start times. That would be a disaster for the union.

Reason being for instance appoxmately 60% of walk sequenced mail will be ready for your office at 0600 , the remaining 40% will be ready at different times as a walk sequence machine could be doing up to 4 or even 5 offices for example the stratford walk sequenceing machine does the newham cluster Stratford , East Ham , Plaistow , Forest Gate.

So there is a an order based on when your office gets your walk sequencing work. Each batch of work appoxmately 12 walks has to have 3 passes on the machine before its gets dispatched to your office.

So in future from 0600 that work will start being run on the walk sequencing instead of as now coming straight into your office so you will be getting that work from about 0800 up to as late as possibly 10.

So do we as someone says say in the futre start times should be 0900 until last letter 1500 which limit the number of full time posts or do we allow offices to start when they know they have the work available rather than wait for every offices work to be sequenced.

You see we are not like currys , toys r us or anyother shop etc we have differnt arrival patterns , different location issues such as Gatwick walk sequencing machines provide for Eastboune delivery office which is a longer journey then Forest Gate is to the Stratford walksequencing machines.

Or do we say you can all have worst start times because some offices are scared to negotiate locally.

Why not put walk sequencing machines in delivery offices and amalgamate smaller DO`s into larger DO`s?

The Truth,
Staggering start times do seem unavoidable from what you state BUT you do seem to fail to see that this is of great concern to many of the membership.
You posts appear to get more and more arrogant.
Please answer this question.
If some members start times are moved to say 8am - 3pm and they have say a 25 minute drive home with children to pick up from school. Under this "deal" WILL provisions be made for this? Or will this be upto local offices to agree.
We have a number of people that struggle now, finishing at 2.20pm. And our dom doesn't give a sh*t!
Thanks!

Close. The plans are to put CSSs into the larger DOs and for those DOs to do the other smaller DO's walk sequencing.

No, we don't say there are good start times or bad start times Dingo - we merely agree that the start and finish times will be whatever: for example 8.30 to 3.30, or 8 to 3 or 9 to 4 - whenever the work arrives is then immaterial UNLESS yours happens to be an office that has no local representation, or you are at the end of the food chain then it wouldn't matter what you were negotiating would it. You somehow seem to be obsessed with "local negotiation", why would that be - do you feel that there would be a tier of union activity by passed by having everyone fall under the same umbrella and some of those bods may have to go back to work?

Perhaps there are those with second jobs who need to be able to get a flyer - in which case tough!

Surely if start times are tied into arrival times their will be little room to negotiate locally it will simply come down to geographical pot luck.
If this is the case those with "the worst" start times should maybe be paid a premium for these "unsocial hours". :hmmmm
good times, bad times you know I've had my share

What you say would find no support amongst CWU membership in my D.O, there is no way we will support starting later than nesscary. Anything other than the earliest viable start time will be met with opposition and a continuation of members attending work early.

Make no mistake we will vigorously oppose duty start times being later than needed.

Very true, good point.

But there will still be managers who try and make duty start times later than needed which Id suggest is not what the membership want.

I recall all the unhappiness on this site when 6am starts were first proposed by RML and then accepted by the CWU, so why on earth would we want to start later than we have to just so every D.O starts at the same time. While were at it why not call for every single delivery duty to be scheduled to work the same number of hours each and every day as every other delivery duty.

I would suggest instead of getting so hung up on the possibilty of different start times we concentrate on everything that happens from our start time through to our finish time, that is were we need to be looking, for greater equality and fairness.
