When I said it took a particular kind of person to go forward for union elections it wasn't exactly complimentary - it's far too inbred for my liking and too political and is less about the membership and more about ego.

Just as a matter of interest why the name change? Do you feel that being the truth makes it the truth?
Dont worry dvb you won`t get your branch nomination because lay members are not invited to the AGM. Also as the mailcentre controls all the votes and you are from deliveries you have no chance. Democracy has no role to play in CWU politics.

Lay members certainly are invited to the Branch AGM. Unfortunately not many do.
But there has to be a certain number present or the meeting is not quorate and cannot make any decisions.

Well they are invited in my D.O as a poster is sent down every year, however place/time can make a difference.

This year we are going for a sunday in my branch.

How on earth does the mail cente control all the votes in your branch?

People in D.O's need to to start submitting nominations for union roles that are not MC IR/H & S

Most of the branch committe of my branch are MC based members but unless members out in the D.O's start putting in then it will remain that way.

In my branch the number of members based in a delivery office outnumbers those working in the MC.

Fishtank the northern alliance was made up of Scotland , North East , North West , and Midlands divisions and were very much based around John Keggie.

The Southern alliance was made up of South Central , South East , Anglia and London.

Over the last two years sensible talks have taken place where we have managed to get away from Branch!s only voting on a geographical basis.

Now Wrangled I dont know what planet you are on , I stand for election , and secondly I dont know what the secret is about Lovejoy posting Pete Keenysides "s report up , as pete emails his report to every Branch in the CWU so it is hardly secret.

Now I would love to see some of the posters stand from here but I think they will find just moaning about things hardly assists the membership , as solutions are the order of the day.

Plus the bread and butter of this union is first and foremost are you supported by the members within your unit , then are you supported by your Branch and then are you supported by your divison only then will you stand a chance of being elected to the Postal Executive.

That means you have to have your record anaylised by both Branch!s and the wider membership.

putting up anoymous posts compaining about anything and everything is hardly going to help you get elected.

We can all snipe on the sidelines but how does that help the membership ? Only by meeting the members in different units and understanding what they want and dont want and then explaining the future do you understand from all prespectives the issues and choices we all have to make.

hey the truth..dingo..whoever you are...I am on the planet that stands for democracy and not corrupt practices in the CWU....

all I saw in my time in the CWU was exactly that...and I want to express my alternate view on here.....I don't want decent folk being mugged over with ever increasing subscriptions for ever worsening terms and conditions.....

the points being made here are that there a number of us know the lengths some of the hierarchy will go to...

I have asked the question before and noone answered...it is alleged that the independent scrutineers used by the CWU were once in the employment of the CWU....perhaps you can give us a definitive on this with all your contacts at the highest level?

one small example for you also to consider..why are the top brass trying to get PEC elections moved to two years rather than one?

it is hardly a massive election campaign for them when all they do is put their mugshots and tired old speeches into a voting brochure....

perhaps our delivery lead negotiators in the cosy hotel at Winchester, or wherever it is, can spare five minutes to do this little task...mind you, they are probably busy posting Peter Keenlyside's latest news from nowhere.....

finally big daz....at least you seem to get a poster (read sheet of tatty miniscule writing trying hard not to be read) announcing the branch AGM. I never saw one in my ten years at RM and you can bet it is not on display in 90% of the current delivery offices and the mail centre noticeboards....

by the way, are you going or anyone from your office this year???

if so. let's hope you are going on your mountain bike to save the branch money!!!

If so is security on this site not what it should be? :hmmmm :hmmmm

You have read more into his post than he meant. Every Branch has an AGM and every branch must allow or give the opportunity for every member to attend. Its in the rules.
Rule 4 Members Entitlements and Obligations

1. Members of the Union are entitled to:

1.be treated with respect and courtesy by Union staff, officials and members;

2.seek local assistance and advice from their Branch on any work related problem and, where appropriate, to be represented by the Union before their employer and in agreed circumstances before external bodies;

3.have appropriate matters raised with the Union dealt with promptly and efficiently;

4.attend and take an active part in the Branch Annual General Meeting and all other appropriate membership meetings pertaining to their place of work;

5.stand for Union office in accordance with the Rules and Branch Constitution;

6.vote in all national and local elections in accordance with the Rules and Branch Constitution;

7.receive appropriate benefits and as negotiated by the Union either nationally or locally and appropriate legal services at the discretion of the NEC in accordance with published procedures;

8.apply for assistance from the National Welfare Fund and/or, where such exists, local Welfare Fund;

9.receive a copy of the Union journal;

10.receive a national certificate of recognition upon completion of twenty-five years continuous membership in accordance with published procedures.

11. receive a death benefit consisting of a payment to the spouse, next of kin, or other legal assignee, in the sum of £546 should the member die whilst in membership of the Union, and this to be increased each year on 1 October commencing in 1992 based on the average Retail Prices Index and Average Earnings Index, the averaged out increase to be applied, and it shall be the responsibility of the NEC that these provisions are implemented.

I hope my cover has not been blown and I will no longer be invited to the local CWU Glitterati Christmas Party - oh the shame :sad:

I have been on this and other forums with exactly the same avatar and name for a number of years (and banned from a few) - people from my branch and even some in the office where I work are well aware of who I am, or more to the point, who I am not. I make no secret of my opinions and make no apologies for that.

I am Spartacus :wink:

Mr W as I dont own a car my travel choices are limited.

Did you know using the train from my patch to pboro is at least 50% cheaper than claiming mileage, could well be more than that depending on the mileage payment the branch uses. Anyway the bike ride from station to MC is only 15 to 20 mins depending on how fast one goes and if the traffic lights are green or red when one gets to them.

Am I going? Dont know yet depends on exact location time of day family commitments etc etc

As for anyone else from my D.O, unless its a week day and held in work time and they attend instead of work then i would say no.

Ill be saving the branch plenty more money soon once my PO credentials expire :Applause

Im sure you will agree my two potential replacements are excellent canidates for the membership to choose from?

Its branch elections that cost a small fortune, perhaps we should do away with them, save a bit of money , what do you reckon?

Wrangled the independent scurtineers which the union uses are Popularis which is run by ANN Hock based in Lecister. It has nothing to do with CWU HQs and certianly is not run by them. Part of the anti trade union laws make it complusory for unions to use independent scuritneers for National Elections and ballots. The union used to use the Electoral reform society but they were heavily criticised by Branch`s under the way forward ballot process. So I am at loss what your implying becuause if your saying we own popularis then you wrong. Neither was it formed or owned by the union at anytime.

Furthermore the reason why the union is debating two year elections is that one year elections are costly and mean for a part of the year we are in election mode. Secondly a lot of unions have already moved to this , but equally area Health and Safety reps , divisonal reps are elected on two year elections. Plus some Branch`s have adopted that policy as well.

As an Ordinary member I would even accept a 3 year term but with the proviso that uncontested elections for senior positions within the CWU would not be allowed.

I would also like to see a system that allows fresh blood onto the NEC every few years but how we would so that would need to thrashed out to make if both fair and transparent, and that allowed strong, active, talented and dedicated people to stay on.

Well that's no-one then :Very Happy

You would be right to suggest that longer terms of office would be beneficial - but not apparently for life as happens now. An American President can only serve two consecutive terms of 4 years - so how about two consecutive terms of two years - then it's back to the shop floor and reality for two years and then they can re-apply for election with a fresh knowledge of current issues.

I mean some wag on here suggested Billy and Dave are aware of deliveries problems because they used to be postmen :left:

I would be happy with something along the lines of what you suggested.
