Re: D2Ds and the Environment
Getting back to the thread.....
The general reply in almost all the posts here seems to be that D2Ds are an unwelcome but necessary part of the business and that if we want to keep our jobs we have to keep delivering them.
Quite apart from global warming etc, one of the other biggest problems is the pollution of our planet, the way we continue to foul ‘our nest’. Junk mail is just the tip of the iceberg, but because it continues to be called junk and is usually just thrown away by the general public, it's an obvious place to start cleaning up the environment by stopping it. It's only RM and the deliverers of junk mail that give it euphemisms like "D2Ds", "household"…
Jobs + pay versus a less polluted world - is there a way to resolve this dilemma?

I think an Opt in system rather than the current Opt Out system would be a step in that direction. You could make it more targeted to the receivers, like have types of D2Ds that you opt into or out of.valute wrote:Jobs + pay versus a less polluted world - is there a way to resolve this dilemma?
1. Green D2Ds that have to be on recycled paper or from renewable forests etc.
2. Government D2Ds like the swine flu ones that get delivered to every address regardless.
3. Voucher D2Ds - the save money type ones.
4. Local Fast Food D2Ds.
5. White Good or Home improvement D2Ds.
6. Local services D2Ds.
7. Lifestyle D2Ds. (Sky/Virgin etc)
The receiver choose what sort they want and the Walk log holds the information on types and delivery plan.
For example I would as a consumer opt in 1,2,6 but opt out the rest.
One of the biggest effects on cutting down paper waste on D2Ds would be to ban repeating ones over a certain period. For instance we all seem to get virgin and sky about twice a month, and here we seem to get a certain supermarket every week.
The other will be to remove payment for delivering them

It's a nice idea TBT but don't you think these companies would simply bypass the system by addressing the items as Domino's Pizza does.TrueBlueTerrier wrote:I think an Opt in system rather than the current Opt Out system would be a step in that direction. Re: D2Ds and the Environment
Dominoes till come as door to door at my D.O almost every week we get them.
Virgin and sky come a regular basis as well. Virgin actually generate 1st class mail as the welcome pack they send in the red envelopes to new customers are 1st class mail and they allways pick up new customers on my delivery after sending out leaflets. Just a shame their monthly statements are DSA

An interesting idea, giving people what they request, but I can't quite get my head around it - it would take so much intricate organising. How do you see this working in practice?TrueBlueTerrier wrote:

not delivering them as a basis to save the environment wont hold up, its the people who make them who need to stop making them to save the environment

Re: D2Ds and the Environment
I think it will take a lot more than reduction in leaflets to save the enviroment, its about doing things differently not actually stopping certain activties alltogether.
Sustainable is the key word which means for leaflets reducing the CO2 output of the production process and meeting FSC standards along with more targeted distrubution and less blanket distrubution.

Have heard this before, RM want us to deliver multible d2d in sealed packs to each house, can't see this workingsteven100 wrote:Yep get ready for 5 d2d daily in packs, its coming our way. In return shorter walks
if RM have to put together the packs of d2ds gonna take time and money to do this, even our loving employers coudn't get
us to do this, if there is an automated solution it's gonna cost
the customer (companies sending the d2d's) are not going to want their d2d in a sealed pack, because when the householder recieves their pack through the door, they will just chuck the whole pack away unopened and the householder will not even see
the precious d2d
it would be typical RM to bring in multible d2d in sealed packs, buy the machines to put multi d2d in packs and then find that
companies sending the d2d's don't want them in sealed packs because no-one reads them

Re: D2Ds and the Environment
perhaps RM intend to put the householder's mail inside the sealed pack too so they are forced to open the packet!! then we will only have one item per residence! throwing off will only take 60.666 seconds! what a great idea. I hate door to door. I was told in my induction I could opt out, and decided I would. then I was getting bollocked for not taking them. it is stupid to be paid separately for something that is supposed to be part of the job. they are the most pointless things I've ever encountered in my life. some houses i've delivered to have their recycling box by the front door, with the written instruction 'any flyers or leaflets please!'. i scoop mine off the doormat and put it straight in my recycling without looking at it. i think RM have conned these companies into believing this marketing works - the majority of D2Ds are british gas who have the monopoly of media advertising (probably getting the bulk of their business from radio & TV) and pizza companies who are all over the TV too and vying with local businesses who put menus through letterboxes. I mean, if it worked as well as it does wouldn't RM advertise their different services like the Simply Drop? I hear ads on the radio for this but nothing through my door ...

Re: D2Ds and the Environment
Read in the CWU paper that the CWU will back RM in their persuit to take out more than the agreed maximun 3 d2d's.. Assistant secretary Bob Gibson reply to increased d2d's states - ' This is something that is being dealt with in the current National Talks. I think it is time we as a union " bite the bullet " on this subject and came up with a deal that serves our members best interests going forward. It is time we increased the cap on door-to-door and got as much unadressed work as posssible into our industry and to also enable us to have innovative attendences. Our objective must be to get more work, providing we have the time and the tools to do the job safely and fairly. '
Well that REALLY sounds like the Union is listening to it's members, seems like they're in joint agreement with RM to f**k us all in aspect of d2d's.

Spot on brother. Unfortunately a lot of our workmates seem to want to set fire to their roof's to keep warm. The education system ain't what it used to be. Is that an accident?Roy Mayall wrote:At last, someone who agrees with me on this. Junk mail is anything that people do not ask for and which goes straight into the bin. There are a number of euphemisms for it: "unsolicited mail", "unaddressed mail", "d2d", "household" and one I heard on radio 4 this week, "discretionary mail". It's all rubbish and it should be illegal, and whatever Royal Mail or the union say about it, a mail company that relies on it for their profit is failing in its business. We should be starting a campaign to have it banned. If you don't know the name of a person living in a house you shouldn't be shovelling mail through their letterbox. Period. The union should be fighting for a proper living wage for its members without the need to fall back upon this antisocial and environmentally damaging trade. Don't take this the wrong way,but i am absolutly gobsmacked with some of the responses in this thread
What's next,i aint delivering letters because i don't like doing it and it's bad for the environment
Read my previous posts on this, the un-hacked ones lol,D2D's are our friend, what f***ing company in the world would pay their staff extra for doing a job they are already paid for.
Slag the CWU off as much as you want, but to get the infamous D2D agreement in the 1st place has to be their greatest triumph, and should go down in history as ours unions greatest moment.I know Leighton was gobsmacked with it.
Yes most of us fecking hate them, but some of you are earning £1500 a year extra because of them,i earn £1k!! extra!!
For every D2D i prep wastes time AND i get paid extra for it,i mean, come on.
Bring them on i say.
And as for the tree huggers, purleaseeeee
Awaits mass desertion of the site.

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.
