Save Stourport-on-Severn Delivery Office

As the title says, please help us save Stourport Delivery Office.

We are a small office in Worcestershire on the edge of the Wolverhampton area which includes WV, WS and DY postcode areas, we are under the later, DY. We are a hard working office dedicated to our customers.

Over the last 6 months Royal Mail have earmarked our office along with Bilston in our area to be closed down and moved into nearby offices. Bilston into Tipton and us, Stourport into Kidderminster.

The reason is down to cost and nothing else. The workers of Stourport will be greatly effected by this move so will the customers of this town let alone what effect it will have on the enviroment on the surronding area.

That was the article in the Express and Star, Kiderminster editin back in October when it was leeked to the paper.

The campaign to save Stourport Delivery Office has now started and there was an article in this weeks Kdderminster Shuttle, follow the link to the digital edition and it is on page 7.

STOURPORT Royal Mail workers fear the town’s delivery office will be closed down, causing “huge” disruption to customers and staff.

Michael Dobbins, Communication Workers Union (CWU) representative, believes Royal Mail bosses have earmarked the High Street office for closure and will base all workers at the Kidderminster office.

A spokesman for the postal company said there are no firm plans for the delivery office but Mr Dobbins said Royal Mail was currently looking into the cost of closing the office down.

He added he believed bosses would start pushing for closure at the beginning of the financial year.

“They’ve employed a manager to do a feasibility study into the cost of closing Stourport down and moving it to Kidderminster,” he said, “It would have a great effect on people in Stourport if it was to close.

“Stourport is one of the most efficient delivery offices in the area and the staff work extremely hard to give the people of Stourport a great service.”

He explained that if the office closed, residents and businesses would have to use post offices in Areley Kings and at the Co-op superstore, in Lombard Street, to collect packages.

“Delivery times would be later than they are now,” added Mr Dobbins. “A lot of businesses like to pick up their mail from the office in the morning on a daily basis. If we move, they won’t be able to do that.

“There’s also extra travelling. There would be more traffic from Kidderminster and Stourport to collect the mail.

“Staff don’t want to move because a lot of us have worked there for a considerable amount of time. It’s been a second home to us.

“It’s going to cause huge disruption to customers and staff in Stourport. If it does happen we’re going to stand up and fight against it.”

Dave Jones, political officer for the Wolverhampton and district branch, said workers were due to launch a campaign against any planned closure yesterday.

A Royal Mail spokesman said: "We constantly review the operational efficiency and commercial practicality of all our units.

“However, at present, we have no firm plans regarding Stourport Delivery Office.”

'No firm plans' to close down office.

Royal Mail has confirmed to staff it has no firm plans for Stourport Delivery Office, amid concerns it would be closed down.

In a letter read out to the workers by Wyre Forest MP, Dr Richard Taylor, the postal company said there were still no firm plans for the High Street office.

A meeting was held for staff at the Wheatsheaf pub, in Stourport on Tuesday, when Dr Taylor read out the letter.

Dave Jones, political officer for the Wolverhampton and District Branch of the Communication Workers Union (CWU), said staff were still concerned about any planned closure. People are worried about the disruption it would cause if they are moved to Kidderminster.
'Some workers fear that they won't be able to move because of child care and whether they would be able to afford the travel costs. We're still in limbo.'

Michael Dobbins, CWU representative for the Stourport office, said they would continue with their campaign to keep the office open.
He added that more than 2,600 people had signed a petition to save the office.
'The letter said what we expected Royal Mail to say,' he said.
