Teenage thief caught red-handed after stealing Wallington postman's bike

A schoolboy thief who stole a postman’s bike was caught red-handed as he pedalled away from the scene.

The 15-year-old boy was caught by crime scene examiners Jo Elliott and Jude Guest when they spotted a postman’s cycle helmet and florescent jacket lying in the snow on the pavement.

The pair then noticed someone on a postman’s bike pedalling along Foresters Drive, Wallington and drove up alongside the cyclist only to discover it was a boy wearing school uniform.

The forensic examiners, who were on their way to obtain evidence from a different crime scene at the time, then spoke to a postman delivering mail on foot in nearby Waterer Rise, Wallington, who said he had left his bike in Foresters Drive.

The postman, who had all his mail with him in his shoulder bag, had been unable to lock his bike because the lock had frozen.

A police spokesman said officers were then called in to assist with the incident, which happened at mid-day on Wednesday January 13.

The boy and another youth, also aged 15, were later stopped by a PC and PCSO from Beddington South Safer Neighbourhoods Team riding the bicycle nearby in Daimler Way on the Roundshaw Estate.

Both youths were arrested for the theft of the pushbike and later admitted the offence at Sutton Police Station.

One of the boys received a youth reprimand whilst the other one has been bailed to attend Sutton’s Youth Offending Team later this month.
