Should hope so too, but that's the only way to find out the answer to the (probably rhetorical) "for how long...." question you posed. No thanks i would rather try and fail to improve it than jack it in.

It's a shame the elections for section secretaries are not overseen by independent scrutineers. These are the only CWU positions open to outsiders. Billy is trying to reform the regional level and make some of these lazy f***ers do some work.

Re: CWU Subs.
If longer del spans are agreed and an increase in D2DS with a loss of payment for them i am also leaving the CWU with a heavy heart.
The limited lifted on D2DS doesnt really come into it but longer del spans does so for my sake i hope they dont agree this , but i can not be in a union i do not agree with there are many more in my office that will do the same.
This could be the CWUs last roll of the dice lets hope they know ,understand and have listened to there members

I see absolutely no need for most D.Os to move to longer spans.
The majority of D.Os outside London already have a high percentage of P/T staff and only a fool would believe that will be reversed.
If longer spans are to protect F/T jobs that horse has already bolted for most of us.
Let those offices who still have something to protect move to longer spans.
The rest of us will give it a miss.
Dig in your heels MoNkEyBoY and don't allow your office to be USED to protect another area.

First off monkeyboy you've told us how you helped get walks put back in your office. You did this as a CWU rep.Without the Union it wouldn't have happened.MoNkEyBoY wrote:If longer del spans are agreed and an increase in D2DS with a loss of payment for them i am also leaving the CWU with a heavy heart.

Second - surely the point of the Union is to help the weakest.Without you who will help them?
Thirdly above all I am a trade unionist.I might happen to be a member of the CWU now but I belong to a much bigger organisation with a proud history.Never will I turn my back on that.
The job is changing.No-one can wave a magic wand and stop that.We might not like the changes (we didn't like SDD, we didn't like ....)but only the CWU can ensure the changes are fairly implemented.Who else will stand up to the DOM?
I couldn't leave the CWU.It would be like deciding to racially abuse the Asian shopkeeper, then going home to beat the wife.Alien ideas.
I will take care as I get off my horse.
The societies of consumption and squandering of material resources are incompatible with the idea of economic growth and a clean planet.

Where's my bloody pen??????? Got a diary and allowing £100 of my subs for that the pen must be worth £50ish so where the bloody hell is it? As for the rep selling union diaries for £1 I'd take him outside and give him a good kicking he's obviously taking you for mugs... sounds like management material

The CWU isn't perfect by a long chalk but I reckon there's a fair few of you moaning about it who wouldn't have the job if it wasn't for the union![]()

Re: CWU Subs.
Exreppdo,
You make it sound like we only have two choices:
either accept the union in its current form or have no union at all.
What about reforming the union and getting rid of the branches that put the Labour Party before CWU members?
Reform needs to come top down as well as bottom up.
Where I work, staff have recovered almost £50,000 so far. This is because I found out that management were not following MTSF2 and Substitution policies. Our rep had let them get away with it. Even after HQ were informed the union did nothing to help my workmates recover their money. I had to write to MPs and senior managers in RM to get things moving. To date, I am unaware of a LTB alerting reps to the problems we have had in case other CWU members are also owed money.
My area rep has not been helpful. He is a Labour Party councillor who is sponsored by the CWU, presumably our branch.
A lot of my workmates are unhappy at paying the union sub. We all have to abide by changes to our contracts introduced by collective bargaining whether we are in the union or not. All we are getting for our money is representation from our rep. Most people come to me if they have a problem. I am always happy to help them as I am happy to help anyone who wants it. If I became a rep, I could not be so effective because I would be tied to the IR framework and obliged to send disputes up to area level.
It is only a matter of time before CWU members in weak branches decide to save themselves £150 a year. A lot of union officials are relying on lifeboats they have been told will be there for them. When the time comes, they are going to be surprised at how quickly their friends drop them. Many might find themselves being returned to duties they can't do and ending up on the underperformance process. What goes around, comes around.

Re: CWU Subs.
gotta agree with Mr Tman here , with a Tory Government just lurking around the corner , now is the time to get behind our Union and reps etc not jack em in. David Cameron and his cronies were only recently commenting on how Thatchers Anti-Trade Union laws didnt go far enough and they were looking at cutting back on workers holidays. the Union aint perfect but its all we have got.Tman wrote:Sadly true, and judging by some of the postings in this and other similar threads, some see the union as a cross between Tony Soprano and Father Christmas and get so annoyed when they personally feel things don't go the way they should. Re: CWU Subs.
I think we belong to different unions.
All union posts from the bottom to the top are the subject of a voting process. So if your local rep/area rep or whatever is either not doing the job or isn't up to the job they can always be challenged and replaced. The problem is of course that it is, very often, difficult to get someone to do it.
We are one of the few unions that has a branch system and I would be loathe to see this disappear as it is a very useful level in the union. it's plusses ,for me, far outweigh the minuses. Again it comes down to - if you think you can do better then go for it. No-one in union positions has the right to a job for life and the members are entitled to the best representation they can get.
