All deliveries suspended in Huddersfield

Conditions are terrible, just round where I live 1 woman air lifted to hospital after going through her windscreen, 1 Fireman killed after loosing control of car, it went through a wall and rolled. All buses suspended and numerous reports of major pile ups at junctions on both major and minor roads caused because of black ice.

Be careful out there.

We were all sent out, I got to the walk and conditions were so bad I sent a load of it back. Every footpath was solid thick ice and every cleared path had been rained on and frozen. Before I even got home I heard of one bad fall and a smashed up van, no doubt there will be more reports when we go in tomorrow. If conditions are the same in the morning i'm delivering nothing.

Tuesday and today were still not great. Very heavy mail wise. Swamped with packets, many of which were recorded delivery. Still got a bit of snow/ Ice on the pavements and we had a bit more come down today.

Thawed slightly but still about 2 inches of sloppy slush on the pavements. Slippy as hell and took 5 hours to tippy toe around. Its been raining off and on so hoping its better tomorrow.

so much sickness that those on holiday where asked to come in

Thursday was still difficult due to the heavy snowfall and lack of a rise in temperature. We've had a really cold bitter spell this last few days. Today was a bit warmer and we had some rain early morning which has started to shift the snow. Still got a few dodgy patches here and there, mainly the pavements, although I have got a couple of roads where it's still covered because nobody has ventured out by car and the sun just hasn't got anywhere near to clear it up. Getting loads of mail through. Not stopped since we got back after xmas. The drivers are bombed out with packets and it looks like another week before they clear them. There's even a crew going in on Sunday to try and get on top of them.

Chucked it down for most of the delivery but THANK GOD the ice has now gone

One of the worst days since I joined Royal Mail ( Reserve )

Thrown on a walk I've never done with no tie down sheet ( it's usually tied down in a particular order all over the frame rather than left to right left to right etc )

Didnt even know the majority of the walk was flats, well I say flats it was really slums - one of the most disgusting places i've ever been. The numbers were say for one block 2,4,6,8,10,12 Random Road and then the next one 14,16,18,20,22,24 Random Road so it just looked to me like front doors since it wasnt 0/2 X Random Road and just 4 Random Road. As a result in my first bag I went out with was 10 bundles plus packets absolute hellish weight and not like I could leave it on the stairs ( not that I ever would ) as as one woman said to me ''watch yerself son, they'll steal the eyeballs out yer sockets and come back for yer eyelashes'.If I'd known it was predominantly stairs i'da came away with the 5kg limit rule or whatever it is but even then i'da still been forced since the nearest box was an age away.

So that took absolute AGES for that bit, not just delivering it but finding my way around the bloody place - the way I had managed to tie it down ( after a LITTLE help from someone who didnt really know but was generous enough to at least attempt to help me ) meant that sometimes i'd finish a bundle or street and the next letter would be 10 min walk away or longer i didnt know where I was going.

Plus seemed there was a dog behind every second door and one in every street roaming about off leash with its 'carer' not giving a feck.

Boy was I glad to get home.

The end of another long, hard, week. These days when I finish on a saturday, I almost crawl out of my office on my hands and knees. Surely, there must be a way where instead of winding-up towards the end of our working week, we in actual fact, wind-down.
Saturday should be a day where we can look forward to our sunday off, having done just a minimal delivery.
In the meantime, the CWU should start an immediate campaign to instigate a five-day working week, Mon-Fri with saturday and sunday off for workers. If it can be done in Eire, it can be done here.

I had one days mail of 180kg - two HCT's - fed up.

Easiest day for a while today. Most in my office were ready to go about 8 oclock but we had to wait for the missorts. Very light and not many packets, finished for 11:15. Manager was finished even earlier.

Im sure we'll pay for it tomorrow though.
