Renold Plc (LSE: RNO), the Manchester-based chains and gears manufacturer, has appointed former Royal Mail boss Ian Griffiths as a non-executive director.

He was managing director of Royal Mail Letters and a director of Royal Mail Holdings Plc until 2007, when he resigned amid a dispute over cost cuts.

Reports at the time said Griffiths had resisted £300m worth of cost cuts demanded by the government as a pre-condition for a bailout package.

Prior to joining Royal Mail he was an executive director of engineering group GKN Plc and group managing director of GKN Holdings Plc.

He is currently a non-executive director of Ultra Electronics Holdings Plc.
