Snow joke as posties' bet offers short odds

WHILE many of us are pulling on the thermals during the winter weather, four hardy postmen are pounding the streets of Carmarthen wearing shorts.

Graham Slate, Richard Palmer, Mark Osborne and Jonathan Davies have an ongoing £1 bet to see which of them will crack under the cold conditions and swap shorts for trousers.

Graham, who lives in Clynderwen, but delivers mail in Carmarthen said the bet was still going strong with Richard, Mark and John — all from Carmarthen.

Graham said: "It's been three years since we started it as a bit of fun. There was £1 involved at the start and it still stands at that amount, nothing more.

"It doesn't matter what the weather does.

"We have all worn shorts since the bet started, all year round.

"We are out starting our rounds by about 8am and work through until midday.

"Not one of us has cracked yet, even in the cold weather of the last couple of weeks," added Graham who covers the town centre on his daily round.

He said while there were no high stakes in the bet, it was the friendly rivalry that kept them all going through the bitterly cold conditions.

He said: "This winter has been the coldest for us.

"Last week it was about -12C in town but it was still okay for myself.

"The last few days have been nearer 0C so its been fine," he added.

"The bet could go on and on I suppose, we are all determined not to be the loser." As the four postmen set out on Wednesday morning they were faced with more snow which had fallen on Tuesday night into Wednesday morning.

In some parts roads were closed after more than an inch fell overnight and drifted.

One of the affected roads was the A485 was closed between Alltwallis, just outside Carmarthen and Lampeter on Wednesday

Yeah, but being welsh they got an advantage of being able to snuggle up to a nice mountain sheep if their little bits get cold. Do you wear wellies with the shorts as well lads.
