Royal Mail wont provide dog whistles. Our line manager would just snigger if asked and suggest we carry dog biscuits as he dips his rich tea into his coffee. They cannot even supply snow chains as they have spent the office health and safety budget covering every inch of wall with health and safety posters.

Office health and safety budget now that I'm afraid is a new one on me. Most health and safety posters are provided free to business units.

Dog owners, normally women. Astound me with their ignorance and stupidity. The amount of times I've heard dogs barking and baying for blood behind a door as you wait to deliver a parcel is often followed by the owner either just flinging open the door regardless or alternatively trying to hold the dog with one hand whilst trying to restrain Cujo with the other. Either the way, the result is the same - loss of control and the inevitable brawl between me and the dog.

" Oh dear, I'm so sorry about that, she's not normally like this..she seems not to like Postman" . Yeah, like the dog can identify between me and anyone else walking up the path, from behind a closed door.

I've been bitten twice, by dogs who their owner have proudly claimed are ' fine and won't bite ' and then looked all confused when they do.

But the worst culprits? The idiot owners whose dogs are off the leash in the street and when they attack you just stand like statues not having a clue what to do and then act even more daft when you shout at firstly the dog and then secondly the owner for being such a dickwad.

I hate dogs. :Boo hoo! :Boo hoo!

Without wishing to tempt fate, in nearly 20 years I've never been bitten, although I've had a few close calls...(I've been bitten by a cat whilst working though... :left: )

The thing that annoys me, is why some dog owning morons don't put the animal in another room with the door shut before answering the front door. Simples.

The whistles are a non-starter.
Many dogs do not respond at all to them and in some cases it can even make the dog more aggressive.
It could potentially give you a false sense of security and put you at greater risk while you were trying to use one.

Been lucky so far.I've been with Royal Mail almost 26 years and been bitten 3 times. I know it's three times too many, but each time it was the thick owners fault. The last time was about eight years ago, I had a recorded for this woman to sign for and she was trying to keep her dog in and sign for the recorded at the same time. The result was the dog pushed pass her and bit me on the groin, I did laugh.
One time we had a pepper spray to prevent dog attacks, but if you got caught off guard it was too late.

I think it's something to do with sound frequency range , a young person would have a range of 20 - 20,000 khz - kilo hertz ? - an average adult up to 15,000 khz ( I've heard stories of high pitched sounds deliberately aimed at places where youths congregate intimidating people ) , apparently some dogs can hear treble / high pitched sounds beyond that ( 20,000 khz ) , I'd buy the bit about riling a dog with high pitched sounds as apparently they'd be uncomfortable for it .

From Googling whistles - apparently the shorter the whistle , the more high pitched the sound .

Someone here has suggested downloading these high pitched sounds as MP3's and then putting them as ringtones on a mobile phone . http://www.jetcityorange.com/dog-whistle/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

" Smaller dogs are more sensitive to higher frequencies compared to larger dogs." " Dogs lose their hearing as they age just like people do "

Whilst I wouldn't actually get pleasure seeing a dog hurt and put down as it is their owners fault after all, but I have been recently been attacked by a German Shepard and it is really scary having such a large and vicious dog charge at you.
Unfortunately this was the 2nd attack from this dog in the last year and I was soft the first time as I live by the guy and he was so sorry etc and promised it would never happen again.
I did report it to work, but not to the Police, however this time I went to the Police and initially they seemed helpful and said they would help to take the man to court as that was the only way to get anything done.
Anyway, 4 weeks later and despite me ringing them at least 4 times they haven't even warned this guy. I have written to the Police Complaints in sheer frustration.
In work I have been allowed to pass the mail to the DOM around that area for now, but not sure how long he will let me do that.

Try to find out who your local dog warden is. My partner found ours through the RSPCA after a big german shepard (who lived over the road) kept coming into our front garden every day and crapping. Report the dog to him/her and you should get a follow up.

I spoke to the Council Warden , a very nice lady but she does not miss a trick , she had er .... views on wooly dangerous dogs legislation , and gave me a subtle grilling about the interchangeable dogs that this Chav had :hmmmm

i was riding down road when a big spaniel type dog and alastation both come running towards me barking and teeth showing so i tried to spead up but came off bike as roads were just sheet ice and the dogs were qbout to bite me and if it wasnt for 2 woman taking kids to school who chased them off they would of bitten my face and body. the dog warden doesnt wanna know and so manager phoned police and they said to ring them if the dogs were out again the owners would be in trouble as they have numerous complints of neighbors and 1 of those dogs has bitten me before and the postman who used to do round before me ive had 6 stitches in past of the spaniel type dog.Our union rep said it was too dangerous for management to go to the owners house with yet another letter telling them to keep dog under control but its ok for me to carry on delivering there. Im not going in work tho tomos as back is killing me and hospital says i should take at least a week off .
