Re: Postmen given shoe chains to make deliveries in the weather
Do Not Wear the chains unless there is considerable snow on the ground .
Reason being they will not grab the ice and you will go arse over tit.
Why DIMS havnt informed staff of this is beyond me.

My duty would take twice as long as i would need to remove the chains when entering the premises of shops/businesses .. i doubt they would take kindly to me marking their flooring with chains on!

In this weather the chains are part of official RM uniform. The businesses shouldn't have a choice - if they insist that you take the chains off - you don't go in. If you were one of their customers they wouldn't dare say a thing to you.Ahebban wrote:My duty would take twice as long as i would need to remove the chains when entering the premises of shops/businesses .. i doubt they would take kindly to me marking their flooring with chains on!

this advice from the Met Office about using Cat Litter instead of Grit or rough / sharp builders sand on paths is apparently all wrong , as when the weather gets slightly warmer the clay component of it makes the surface slipper ; unless it clumps up and people can avoid the lumps .rhino49 wrote:In this weather the chains are part of official RM uniform. The clay would cause a lot of mess if it gets on shoe soles and is walked inside .

Yes it does - given a choice between table salt & cat litter or jack all, I used the litter.....but I swept it up from the path after a couple of hours. It still leaves clay footprints tracked into the shared hallway ( I live in a council maisonette ), but it soaked up the worst of the water & is worth bearing ( especially as we haven't seen the gritters in our road since December, but they've still commandeered all the road salt from local shopsnorbert wrote:this advice from the Met Office about using Cat Litter instead of Grit or rough / sharp builders sand on paths is apparently all wrong , as when the weather gets slightly warmer the clay component of it makes the surface slipper ; unless it clumps up and people can avoid the lumps .rhino49 wrote:In this weather the chains are part of official RM uniform. Re: Postmen given shoe chains to make deliveries in the weather
I've got some of these snow chains and i've been using them every day. They were issued 10 years ago and haven't been issued since. Iv'e been told that they are part of our PPE but are not on general issue.
You have to ask your manager to order them for you. Good luck with that. Old hands will know which manager to ask, ie; which manager will actually order them and which one will forget about it as soon as your backs turned.
So, do they work ? Absolutely yes ! They work equally well on fresh snow, compacted snow and ice. You've still got to take care but in all this snow and ice over the last 3 weeks I've never slipped once. Just watch out for houses that have snow covered ceramic tiles outside as they can be very slippy when the snow starts melting.
Forget about doing your walk in the same time as before. It just aint possible. I've got an urban walk and although I've completed every day, i've also booked OT every day.

Re: Postmen given shoe chains to make deliveries in the weather
I have had chains now for about 8 yrs, They do make it alot easier to get round your delivery when there is snow on the ground but are not much good when its black ice. if its heavy snow they can clog up and you do have to keep knocking the snow off them but on the hole I think they are one of the best things that i own. I feel much safer when wearing them but they do need to be treated with respect, ( they are still not 100% safe ).

Re: Postmen given shoe chains to make deliveries in the weather
Would that mean if anyone had an OAD on snow or ice, without being issued snow chains, could they take action against RM? After all managers are pretty stern about wearing hi-vis & issue shoes.....why should chains be any different in snowy & slushy conditions?Thorby Bislam wrote:I've got some of these snow chains and i've been using them every day. Re: Postmen given shoe chains to make deliveries in the weather
If you are unfortunate enough to fall this is instruction to Ice Skaters but you can relate salient points of this to walking on pavements & paths http://www.wikihow.com/Fall-and-Recover ... all-on-Ice" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Bend your knees and go into a dip position. If you know you are about to fall just go into a dip position.
5Fall to the side and lean forward as you fall on the ice. This will lower the chances of you getting injured.
6Recover from your fall. Turn over on your hands and knees.
7Take one foot and place it between your hands.
8Take the other foot and place it between your hands. Applying pressure to your toes and Using your toe picks will help you so you won't slide.
9Push yourself up and stand up on the ice.

editTips
Put your hands in your lap when you are on the ground. If you put your hands on the ice another skater could accidentally skate over them.
If other skaters are around, allow them to help in case you do get injured.
Do the skating move you fell on. This will help you get practice and have less fear of falling on that move. Be ready to fall again though.
Further tips, for beginners:
Step 4: If you are losing your balance, don't wave your arms around trying to regain it. Bend your knees, and start going into the dip position. It helps to immediately put your hands on your knees, which prevents you from waving them around and falling backwards on your head or back. It also helps prevent you from instinctively catching yourself with your hand. Often, this simple act will be enough stop you from falling.
Step 5: (A) When you fall to the side, imagine yourself landing right on the side seam of your pants, between the pockets. (Do this even if you're wearing a skirt.) The upper leg bone is the single largest bone in your body and is very strong, and the side of your leg is mostly muscle and connective tissue, which is less prone to injury. (B) As you fall (to the side, of course), raise your arm on the side toward the ice into an 'L' position with your elbow above the shoulder, flattening your hand as you do so. Practice this several times off-ice to get the feel of it. The 'L' shape allows you to catch your upper weight with the entire section of arm from above the elbow down to fingertips. This distributes the impact over a large area, preventing injury (particularly to the wrist). More importantly, it absolutely prevents you from hitting your head on the ice. [Again, try this several times off-ice to get the feel of it, and to understand how it prevents you from hitting your head.]

I've been using these very same chains for the last 2 weeks. They ARE very good and it's true that you don't slip while wearing them. However, to say that you can complete your duty in the same time I find very questionable. It's taken me about 30 to 60 minutes longer due to the heavy snowfall, depending on the day to day conditions and traffic we've had to deliver.

Ask a manager in the office i'm based at for snow chains and they will tell you that we do not have any Royal Snail has run out!
as for going faster on your delivery with them on i can just see the photos now from Dartford Do all smiles how sad
it makes me want to shout at them wait till they make your delivery not needed,we are making you part time, we can drop your mail at your house, bet they wont be smiling then!
we had two serious injuries at our place before they stopped us going out only it really did not matter what we had to say about our safety
shame the managers were so short sighted they have left themselves wide open,as for the two that were injured we have collected for them just in case they need any extras heres hoping a full and speedy recovery!

I think we all had an inkling that RM's modernisation plan was ultimately to get the whole workforce in chains
Interesting what the effects of weight/walk lengths are on the body especially with the talk of longer spans. My chains fall apart after 3-5 days full delivery
