The Royal Mail modern apprentice programme has been designed with the learning skills council specifically to provide jobs for school leavers (16-18) with little or no current work experience.

Our apprenticeships offer you the chance to gain a recognised qualification, whilst earning a competitive salary at the same time. The training scheme lasts for nine months and combines practical and theoretical learning with development. You'll learn about Royal Mail operations, gain an understanding of the postal business and work towards your NVQ level II qualification in Mail Service Management.

These apprenticeships are based in our busy factory-style Delivery Offices, where you'll arrange the mail so you can deliver it later on. These apprenticeship opportunities will also see you delivering mail on foot and bike - you'll travel six to eight miles a day, carrying around eight heavy mailbags (weighing up to 10kg).

Hours of work will be over 5 days per week Monday to Saturday, and will vary depending on location.

For your chance to become a Royal Mail postman - joining an organisation with a 350-year history that touches the lives of everyone in the UK - you'll need to be an excellent team player with good interpersonal and communication skills. You should also be confident working independently and using your own initiative.

Good old RM; yet another word whose meaning has been corrupted to mean something totally different from it's original intended meaning. Still, they'll be the DOMs and WATLs of the future, no doubt...

Exactly - I'm all in favour of getting more full time jobs in, but surely it should go with seniority ( 3.5 years and counting ) not a johnny come lately......there's at least a dozen PT that would be pissed off to see a wet behind the ears kid waltz in with a FT contract and we're getting by / struggling with 25 - 35hrs basic

I was questioning whether the RM 'apprenticeships' are actually full time.
If you read the posts by rmapprentice, he is on a 25 hour contract.

I'll admit, I've missed that - but RM can't say one thing in print, and do another in deed ( spot the deliberate mistake )

Don't suppose for one minute that they'll be paying them full rate.

Maybe not, but that will be an age related thing - if RM give them a 40hr contract & if they work it till the threshold, their hourly rate will jump, but their hours won't be allowed to drop.

I had a look at the application for my son, don't know if I want him working for RM the only vacancy at my office was for an apprentice 'letter sorter' doing a 25 hour week. Seems strange that you can get an NVQ in letter sorting, it'll look great on his CV
