One worker in five does an average seven hours 12 minutes overtime a week for no money.

A tuc study reveals today that bosses got a £27.4billion gift from five million staff last year. That's an average £5,480 each - the most since records began nearly 20 years ago.

Unions say many staff have agreed to cut paid hours to avoid job losses and this has led to a rise in overtime.

Topping the unpaid work league are people in London, closely followed by the South East and the East. Only Wales bucked the trend and saw a fall.

Of the five million, nearly 900,000 regularly do more than 10 hours free. The TUC has declared today Work Your Proper Hours Day and calls on bosses to thank staff for the extra graft.

Tuc boss Brendan Barber said: "Sacrifices made by staff have saved jobs and kept companies afloat. But millions still work too many hours."
