Mail robber strikes in North Yorkshire

A postwoman was thrown to the ground and her van stolen in a mail robbery in Selby District.

The 31-year old was delivering in Eggborough when a man pushed her and stole the keys to her van.

She tried to pull the keys from the ignition as the man drove off, but was forced to let go as he sped away.

The incident happened at about 1pm on Monday, in High Eggborough Lane, and involved a hired van being used by Royal Mail.

The woman had been delivering to a house and was returning to the white Vauxhall Combo van when she used the remote operating system to unlock the doors.

The man jumped out from behind bushes and pushed her backwards, causing her to drop the keys.

A North Yorkshire Police spokesman said: “The delivery driver bravely ran after the van and attempted to remove the keys from the ignition by stretching through the open driver’s side window.

“But she was forced to let go once the vehicle picked up speed, causing her to fall to the ground.”

She was not injured.

The van was carrying mail and some personal items belonging to the delivery driver.

The robber was described as white, about 5ft 6ins tall, with a thin face with stubble and of medium build. He was “scruffy looking”, wearing a beanie hat, a light grey fleece zipped up to the chin and blue jeans. The van had “M&G HIRE” in red on the side and the registration number VE07NLC.

Police are keen to speak to the driver of a white Transit-style van seen in the area at the time. Witnesses should contact DC Tania Gillman at York CID on 0845 60 60 24 7, quoting incident 12100001905.
