Everybody got sent home here. I can't believe some offices still send posties out, unless the snow isn't as thick there..

I expect we won't deliver tommroowow either since it's still snowing now and isn't going anywhere with freezing temperatures.

We delivered as normal today and we will be out as normal tomorrow, although we have only got a few inches of snow and TBH it's a hell of a lot easier to deliver in snow than the black ice of last week

Our manager did a u turn and wanted to send us out to do some walks, until our union leader step in and said I personally don't think any of us should go out today,as it too risky, after further discussion with the manager boss, it was finally decided we can all go home about 3 hours later

PS! just to add we did get hell of a lot of snow, the snow was half way up my leg.

A colleague of mine couldnt make it in because of the snow. He couldnt make it to his nearest DO either and they used a days annual leave. The manager went out later to check the roads around where he lives and ended up in a ditch :Very Happy
What is it with managers nowadays, they are just too cocky for their own good, they think they know it all, if they only would listen to it workforce, have a little bit of trust, it really serves that manager right,he got what he deserved :no no

Had the day off yesterday, today woke up to 1 foot of snow and no power and walked into our local D/O ,we work at one 12 miles away, the manageress said "hi ,sign this" and off i toddled back home and was back in bed in ten minutes.
The snow is now at least 18 inches and it is still snowing but is supposed to stop and then freeze ,the power is flickering again ...bring it on.... :nana

If a severe weather has been issued by the MET OFFICE then your DOM has to seek concurrence on implementing the SWOP .

Here is the letter i gave to my DIM regarding our situ

All fine and dandy brother, but just out of curiousity why are you giving (and I have read it) your DIM said letter? What the heck is your own safety rep doing?

I thought of taking the initiative did speak to my h/s rep the previous night so he was aware of the letter getting handed in,and he did sit in on the talks that took place.

Having thought about it for 5 mins i take my previous comment back. I havnt a clue what the H/S was doing i do know he had spoken to the area H/S rep earlier on that day,but as for putting pen to paper and making it offical i think he likes to do things verbally. My approach is first by verbal if i feel im getting know were i then put pen to paper as then both parties have an offical record of my concerns if anythink did happen to a member of staff then we all have somethink to fall back on.

As the unit rep i feel this is not the sole responsability of the H/S rep and if i put the letters in i know it has been done for sure

And in one aspect I am in complete agreement, first consult them (Management) verbally, then failing any managerial movement/action, give them it in writing. Consideration also should be given to adding the following to the bottom of any submitted (h&s letters) in bold red lettering.

Example:
Respectfully yours
Signature
CWU Workplace/Unit Health & Safety Rep
c.c.
Area Health & Safety Rep
Delivery Sector Manager/SOM

This letter does not imply that conditions are safe and healthy or that arrangements for welfare at work are satisfactory in all other respects.

absolute b***ocks :cfo - it's not your fault it's the worst weather for a long time , nor is it RM's but you've made the effort to get into work , it's RM's responsibility to find you work that doesn't put you in a A&E waiting room :hmmmm

We had about 6 inches yesterday so only local priorities went out. We didn't have that much snow last night but it dropped to -18 over night and was -14 this morning. We went out in pairs just to do local deliveries and were back at the office by about 10am by which time some mail had made it across from MC so we sorted that then went home about midday.
