Stamp out this ridiculous idea

Royal Mail seems worried about the loss of revenue incurred in the public's re-use of postage stamps recovered from items which pass through its sorting offices without being franked.

To combat what they clearly see as fraud, the 'think-thank' has come up with a novel modification of first and second-class stamps: they now have two small, partly-cut areas about one centimetre long which would be torn out of the stamp should anybody try to remove it from the envelope.

All Royal Mail has to do is ensure no stamped items escape their well-inked franking machine. Am I expecting too much?

I have just tried this and it's still possible to peel the stamp off even with the partly-cut out bit. Back to the drawing board Royal Mail.

The accuracy of a machine against the half-hearted estimate of some disinterested postie.... :hmmmm Not much of a contest there.

i don't think the problem is with the odd unfranked stamp not being cancelled, the main problem is the amount of stamps being washed, look on ebay for unfranked stamps (ones which have no gum) you will see people making a living out of it, the trouble is that they are allowed to sell these stamps it is only fraud when the buyer uses them to post with.
have you ever wondered why there is a demand for used stamps?
