Residents give snow praise to Colchester posties

A TEAM of nine posties who braved freezing temperatures and icy conditions to deliver letters over Christmas have been praised by residents.

Post in Colchester was suspended for a few days because of the ice and snow.

Ginny Guy, of Manor Road, Wivenhoe, said: “It was treacherous on the pavements and roads, but our postmen kept on going.

“We had post right up until Christmas Eve and the conditions were awful. They all deserve praise.”

“It was great to get my lovely Christmas cards and it is important for elderly people.”

Spencer Lamont, who has been a postman for ten years, said: “We went out every day. I live in Monkwick, Colchester, and it took me an hour and a half to push my bike to Wivenhoe.

“Normally I would come on a scooter, but I couldn’t because of the snow and ice.

“I set off at 5.45am and would finish delivering everything by 5pm.

“The whole office went out and we didn’t miss a day.”

very laudable - but isn't there a element of Royal Mail divide and rule with Essex and neighbouring East London ? part of Greater London - the nearest county

Try cycling from Wivenhoe or even the Monkwick estate to London and then decide if they're neighbours. Basildon possibly, but Colchester no.

Wivenhoe has its own Delivery Office apparently according to Google Maps and is 2.6 miles from Colchester.

Monkwick has many points in roughly the same area but furthest distance from Colchester is 2 miles. Both roughly the same distance I walk in to my DO every day.

Or has - and what I suspect - a post been deleted which makes Night Tonic post redundant.

The snow is not really a problem, take your time and watch your feet and you'll be ok but black ice is another problem altogether you can't see it and you only know you're on it when your feet go from under you

Mixed on this one, yes there is health and safely concerns however H+S is sometimes used as an excuse as well. Just sometimes mind.

Very good but you are missing 1 important point!!!! In between there is a tidal river between the 2 so the poor sod had to go into town before going out again. In my spdo we had to deliver where it was "safe" and we got the job done!!!! H&S is using common sense as when the snow melted and refroze the next day was worse!!!!!

h&s is not all common sense ! but it does cover not putting yourself in any dangerous situation known or unknown and the burden is firmly with the dim dom's on that front to insure your wellbeing
