Burnley Christmas parcels delayed by bad weather

THOUSANDS of Christmas parcels have not been delivered because of East Lancashire’s treacherous roads.

Royal Mail has confirmed postal workers have struggled to access some houses because the recent icy weather has left streets too slippery.

One of the worst hit areas has been Burnley where Royal Mail workers have struggled to get up and down steep side roads.

The firm has confirmed it is now working hard to ensure that parcels are delivered as soon as possible, although more bad weather has been forcasted.

Bank Hall Coun Julie Cooper, the leader of the opposition Labour group on Burnley council, said she had been in contact with the town’s main delivery depot on Bank Parade.

She said: “I have had calls from people who were expecting parcels.

“I have been a councillor for a number of years and this has never happened before, but I have been inundated with calls from people.

“I am told there are literally thousands piling up in the depot in Burnley.”

Lancashire County Council bosses said they were focusing gritting efforts on the main “key” roads, which represent about 35 per cent of the total network.

This has left residents in side streets complaining they have been missed out, and some councils, including Burnley, had to cancel refuse collections last week because their wagons could not access hard-to-reach areas.

A Royal Mail spokesman said: “Our people are out on delivery in often appalling weather conditions, keeping the mail moving. More than 95 per cent of Royal Mail's operation worked completely normally over the festive period despite the prolonged bad weather, but in a very small number of areas some deliveries have been disrupted because of severe weather and bad road conditions."
