Sharp cutters found in toddler's present

A TODDLER who found a potentially lethal pair of cutters in one of his Christmas presents "could have chopped his fingers off", say his angry parents.

Little Joshua Young, from St Budeaux, had a lucky escape when the sharp implement, resembling fabric shears, fell from inside a pair of 'creepy crawly pyjamas' given to him by a family friend.

Luckily, the three-year-old avoided touching it – but parents Tiger and Clare are demanding an apology from retailer Primark.

Royal Mail worker Tiger, 31, said: "A friend of ours brought them round at about 11am on Boxing Day, so it was nice for Joshua to have a late Christmas present.

"He was sat on the floor and thankfully we ripped them open for him. A three-inch blade that looks like it could be used to cut cotton just fell out from inside.

"I've never seen anything like it, it's a horrendous size compared with a three-year-old's fingers.

"If he'd have gone and ripped them open himself he could have cut his hand open – or worse.

"My son could have chopped his finger off with it, it is that sharp."

Tiger and Clare, 26, immediately called Primark's Drake Circus store, who offered them a refund or replacement pyjamas and insisted they would look into how the scissor-style blade got there.

But now the couple are warning other parents to be careful when opening similar packs.

"They offered us a refund, that's not the point," Tiger added.

"Joshua wants the pyjamas, we just think it's shocking that this could happen and you just don't know if someone else will find one in theirs."

Primark told The Herald the firm was taking the incident "extremely seriously" and vowed to carry out its own investigation into how it happened.

A spokesman said: "The safety of Primark's customers is clearly absolutely paramount to the store.

"Primark takes any such incident extremely seriously and will investigate to ensure it doesn't happen again.

"Primark does have very substantial checks in place with all its suppliers, carrying out regular audits on everything from products to working conditions.

"We will redouble efforts to make sure that our suppliers meet our requirements."
