ROYAL Mail paid out more than £1million every month last year to customers whose post was lost, damaged or delayed.

More than 1,000 complaints a day were dealt with and compensation to customers totalled £13million.

And with prolonged strike action that crippled parts of the postal service in summer and autumn this year’s figures could well be worse.

The figures for the last financial year, 2008-9, come as 2p rises for first and second class stamps to 41p and 32p from April are ­unveiled.

Compensation for delayed post was paid at the rate of 142 claims a day, with damaged post attracting 66 successful claims a day.

Rude staff also cost the Royal Mail as £3,431 was paid to the 56 people who brought complaints.

In the past financial year the Royal Mail paid out for 600,885 ­complaints, up nine per cent on the previous year, when customers made 1,439,245 complaints but only 555,416 received compensation. Rising levels of compensation are another financial headache for ­Royal Mail, which, despite rising profits, faces falling numbers of customers and a potentially ­crippling pensions deficit.

The ­dispute between the carrier and the Communication Workers ­Union, still to be settled, left it with a huge backlog of mail to clear and a number of high-profile former customers who switched to rival firms.

Matthew Elliott, chief executive of the TaxPayers’ Alliance, said: “These figures paint a picture of chaos, incompetence and ­confusion.

“The taxpayers who are ­propping up this failing business no longer feel able to rely on it to deliver their post and nor do businesses.

“It’s time our politicians grabbed the bull by the horns and realised that nothing short of full privatisation is going to fix the mess.”

Steve Lawson, editor of the Hellmail Postal News website, said: “Sadly it’s a vicious circle and any reduction in the quality of service just encourages more customers to switch to online postal services, ­online billing or email.”

The Federation of Small ­Businesses said: “These figures are worrying but not surprising.”

Royal Mail said: “Recorded complaints in 2008-09, when we achieved first and second class mail ­targets, were eight per cent lower than 2007-08 and equivalent to about one for every 14,700 ­letters delivered.”

The Tax Payers Alliance which are very " close " to the Conservative Party . Obviously it's unmanageable : and the " magic " solution is Privatisation . Nothing to do with of course with the fact that there's ex Private Sector bosses that are now RM Senior & Executive Managers running it .

No doubt the privatised RM will be the same roaring success as water , gas , the buses and the trains ( 4/5 X more taxpayer's subsidy )

How many cards did we deliver this christmas that were wrongly/insufficiently addressed?

How many parcels did we put back together and bag up because the sender thought a sheet of paper was fine as wrapping?

That way of packing went out in the 60's then there is the mandatory To Auntie Joan round the corner from etc , etc - RM want rid of all these experienced staff that can sort out all these "little puzzles" because their faces don't fit :lfo :cfo :mfo - seen it happen , it always goes wrong

when you read articles like that, it makes you sick. some lazy journalist with an agenda painting a one sided picture that tries to help justify another no-marks comment of “It’s time our politicians grabbed the bull by the horns and realised that nothing short of full privatisation is going to fix the mess".
how the F--k is privatisation going to fix it. the job is labour intensive and its partly due to going down this road of privatisation, that the labour force has become more and more disenfranchised from the job, that less and less posties give a toss now . shall i go and find some sellotape, no why bother the line manager will only tell me off for moving , i,ll just toss it in the alt as it is . the constant chipping away of the posties esteem .....
