RM can sack people for using cars because if the use of cars has not been risk assessed they are in breach of the law. If RM ban the use of cars then storing mail in them has mail integraty issues that no insurance will pay out on so it would be viewed no different than say deciding to store mail in your garden shed without RMs knowledge. There would be quite a few reasons they could give you the sack like insurance issues, no vehicle inspections, not holding docs on the car ect. they would not need any National Agreement on those but could sack you for gross misconduct for ignoring repeated demands you do not use your car.
I would tend to agree with brother linkinpark, namely on the lines of that management will inevitably say that this person refused to obey a simple managerial instruction hence the sacking (YOU HAVE BEEN INSTRUCTED WITH IMMEDIATE EFFECT AND UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES THAT YOU ARE NOT TO USE YOUR PRIVATE CAR ON DELIVERY) and was therefore found guilty for ignoring repeated managerial demands not to use private cars on delivery. On reviewing the RM Procedure Private Cars on Delivery it clearly states that - the choice to use a private car on delivery is the individual's. However, once an employee chooses to use his/her car on delivery it is his/her responsibility to ensure that he/she obtains permission and complies with all of Royal Mail's conditions for use of a private car on delivery in accordance with the Procedure. Use of private cars must be with management authorisation and with sufficient, adequate and appropriate insurance. Prior permission for use of a private car on delivery must be obtained.
It could be said that this individual had followed the correct procedures and had originally obtained the necessary prior permission and had complied in full with the other requirements contained in the RM Procedure Private Cars on Delivery. However, it should be noted that this Procedure is discretionary and may be withdrawn by Royal Mail at any time without notice and for any reason without explanation.

I know there are 2 DO's in southampton. One allows car use and the other doesn't When the office that does allow car use sends someone to the one that doesn't they apparently can take and use their car

lol you've got 12 duplicate listings there for the same 2 DO's. There are only two large DO's in southampton. Having said that it says southampton area in the first post so it could ba a surrounding DO.

It depends, the national agreement on PCOD says
Delivery employees may use their private cars for travel to, from and during a designated and authorised delivery route, for their own convenience, by agreement with their Delivery Office Manager and subject to certain conditions being met.
so if they have not got permission from the DOM then they are in breach
of the agreement and they then leave themselves open to being dismissed for breach of contract, or something else.

i accept that but there are a lot of good people working hard to improve that situation we had 94% support for the two days
national and a lot of people on the picket line 40 friday and 25 saturday. those figures compare pretty well with strong areas.
The previous leadership of wessex south central was extremely shall we say apathetic and oppurtunistic i know its where i did my apprenticeship.but as i said things are improving KEEP THE FAITH BROTHER
My old office uses cars, nearly everybody who drives takes there first bag (Pouch) in the car and parks up, whats the problem and why can you sack somebody for doing this?

Because you need the DOMs permission - they probably didn't.
The use of the Royal Mail business insurance cover is only effective if an employee has completed the declaration form and sent the appropriate letter to their insurers, had their appropriate documents checked, had the car checked for road worthiness and is therefore authorised to use the car by the Delivery Office Manager.

We have to use cars in our office as there are no drop boxes. We have had photos taking of possible places to have them but royalmail blame the council saying they want to much money for planning permission. Anyway I have seen mentioned park and loop can someone please explain what this is. I don't like using my car but just couldn't do the job without it especially with all the packets we get nowadays

We have to use cars due to no bag drops?
Oh come on mate really? No bag drops no delivery, I take my 16 kilo bag and the rest is thier problem, if they can not provide drops for futher bags it's thier problem not mine, i'm not gonna use my car at my expense and brake the law to help them
And as long as you keep using your car the planing permision will get sidelined forever you are the plonkers for using your cars if they couldnt secure planning then tough it's dim dom's job to ensure you have your extra bags not yours
