Lapsing - In essence taking someone off their delivery and splitting it between a number of other duties. Those duties do it as extra on top of their duties but should not be forced to work beyond their contracted hours.Pegman wrote:i can believe him finishing earlier than most, but 10:30am is stretching it a bit, I met a colleague going back at around 12 noon, i still had another 3 hrs minimum, it's packets, recorded and specials which make a lot of the difference, I had 9 specials alone, recordeds coming out of my ears, but there is a lot of disparity in walks in our office some are back well before others even on really heavy days.
Can someone explain in English what lapsing actually is, I've never heard the term in my office

Lapsing or absorbtion is when you have say 8 posties to cover an extra walk. We cover about 4 a day in our office.
It was part of the flexibilty deal in the 2007 agreement and is to insure you work all paid hours.
You have to prep the frame and then each take out a portion of the calls. We take it with our own walks and some do it before and some after. Others who already have a walk which takes all their time weds onwards dont do it at all.
Rows of houses all bearing down on me........I can feel their blue hands touching me.......All these things in all positions.........All these things will one day take control..........

Like I said, I have no reason whatsoever to lie, and i'm not really bothered if you believe me or not. I had a lot of packets today but still only 7 bundles of mail and was finished and home before 12. There's half the normal mech and about a tenth of the normal flats.krussel wrote:There was absolutely bugger all on today, I had 5 bundles for my entire walk - 600 houses.
When you say 5 bundles do you mean just 5 mech type bundles.![]()
Our guys went out today with anything from 7-12 bags each. When i finished at 3.25pm some were still out. The only way you could finish before 11am is you are a firms driver and then you most likley will have parcels these days.
The 10.35 am christmas finishes was at least ten years ago and everyone on here knows that. With 600 calls and christmas packets i cant see you taking less than 3 hours (more like 4) to get around which means you would have needed to be out by 7.30am yesterdayWe still had lorrys coming in past that and most were not out till about 10.00-10.30am
I am sorry OnAflyer, it may be just me, but i simply cannot see how it is true
Yesterday we were fully prepped for 7.30 and out for just after 8.
My walk is 600 houses, around 500 semis and the rest terraced. There's a good bag drop right in the middle and another one I can use, so I don't carry heavy bags. I do walk at a good pace but don't run, and the walk takes me anywhere from under 2hrs to 3.45 on an exceptionally bad day - but it's usually less than 2.45. Pegasus has it at 3.25, but it doesn't take that long on an average day regardless of whether you do it by the book or not.
I'm not on a wind up, i'm simply saying what happens in my office - apart from packets, xmas is the easiest time of year as we spend less time on IPS due to PT staff coming in to throw their own walks off (it's usually 2hrs), mail arriving earlier and getting out earlier due to no missort run.

Re: Don't worry lads
I never mentioned finish times until people accused me of lying or being on a wind up. It's not bragging or gloating - but there's no point believing that everyone in RM still has it crap because they don't. Reading on here what goes on in other offices I count myself extremely lucky to work in the one I do.fishtank wrote:I couldn't care less whether it's true or not,
Anyone who comes on here bragging about how easy his job is,knowing how difficult some people are finding it at this time of year is in my most humble opinion not the sharpest tool in the box.
There is more than one side to the story.

7 bundles of mail for 600 houses....
I make up my bundles to the same place everyday unless it's mental with thick stuff, but anyway I normally have 3 or 4 bundles per bag and for a round with 500 [not 600!] drops I have min. 6 bags which would total a minimum 18 bundles....
7 bundles for 600 houses LMAO - sure half of them aren't derelict!!??

I still find this hard to get my head around this.
If what you say is true and your taking out just 7 bundles of mail , even with packets that’s only about 2 and ½ bags worth, cant be any more. I am simply amazed, no astounded as its about the amount I started with 1988 and that’s nearly 22 years ago.
600 calls at say 4 letters per house (which is nothing at Christmas time as i am averaging more like 10) is still 2400 letters which will make up a lot more than 7 bundles in fact more like 7 bags, possibly more with packets.
My friend you have the job that I would love to go back to as you are working in a time warp office the like i have never seen or heard of before. No wonder you have retained such a positive attitude towards the job as yours has not changed. Amazing

Lol Krussel , sounds more like the Disney channel , than reality. In my 34 years service and several offices I`ve worked in Ive never heard a story like it . Must be working in a little island off Scotland, that gets a mail boat twice a week lol.

It was 4 light bags. Today I had 8 bundles but only 3 packets.krussel wrote: I still find this hard to get my head around this.

The only thing I can assume is that delivering to an inner city estate with lots of dole/sick wallers means hugely different mail volumes compared to an area full of professional households.
I started in 1997, and then I had 2 bags Mon-Fri and 1 on a Saturday. My walk isn't unusual for the office, the mail is at least average compared to the other walks and quite possibly more than average.
PS: 2400 letters - i'd say more like 1000 as an educated guess.
Maybe this explains in a single thread why Pegasus doesn't work properly for many offices - it doesn't take into account mail volumes and prep time for those volumes. It's been run in my office and took 0 hours out.

How many times can I say it, I work in a BIG city and a pretty large office with 150+ staff. The more reading I do on here the more I am convinced that it's all down to mail volumes.
How else can you explain it? I have 600 houses, the same as many posties all over the country, yet prep time and walk time is less.

Big city offices tend to have more than 150 walks for sure, as iv'e been to one iv'e got a reasonable idea your obviously bucking the trend but not for long i fear and when it comes it's gonna bite your arse for sure and i'll be laughing when you come on here whinging . our office has been hammered over the last week or so so i can't see how your missing out ? but of course you could be compleatly full of sh*t

I'm the opposite , work in a small rural office less than 10 deliverys.
We get out mail maybe a quarter of the trays of letters are walksorted never sequenced and everything else needs to be ips/split, are normal time for getting out on delivery is between 10.30-11!
All these people out of the office between 8-9 sounds incredible to me, we've only just got all our post in the office to be ips'd at 8-8.30!

Earlier in the year our missort run wasn't coming until 10am+, but once we started lapsing it came at 9am instead.themaze617 wrote:I'm the opposite , work in a small rural office less than 10 deliverys.

At christmas we have more people on IPS, as FT staff don't have to prep PT walks - hence we're finished on IPS earlier. Add that to no missort run and we're out earlier than any other time.
