Dingo our area rep has told us we are going to be going into the new van derived duties after xmas and he thought it was a good thing. Could I just ask, do you have any idea how many duties we will lose and just how much longer will our walk's be. I will be 53 after xmas and will have 32 yrs service in I'm struggling now to do a 3.5 hr walk.

Just count up the number of drivers you currently have in the office and that is the number of jobs that will go.(More if they decide to do away with the floaters.)The idea is that a longer delivery span (4hr 15)will be less tiring, if you do not have to carry a bag any more. :hmmmm
The societies of consumption and squandering of material resources are incompatible with the idea of economic growth and a clean planet.

Now Ghostman Door to Door into workload means that door to door will now be part and parcel of your daily traffic. The ceiling of 3 will be lifted and that door to door will be allocated into worktime. You will no longer be paid for them per item. Instead you will recieve a 52 week supplement .
This is what I thought it meant. I just can't see how this helps us posties. Like I said, all of us at our office already treat door to doors as part of our daily work load, we don't believe in prepping them in our own time, I prep a row a day, and currently this causes me to go over my time, prepping 4,5,or 6 sets a day will only make it worse. Only way I could do it would be to have a smaller delivery. I hope I'm not being stupid here and missing something! Any thoughts?

can somebody answer this ? so if we want to stay full time but we get the 35 hr week minus breaks that means we have 7 hours a day to fill can someone break this 7 hours down ?
how much sorting, prep and how long will expanded d2d take ? If your duty already is 3.5hr and you are asked to take packets reggies and extra d2d surly thats gonna make it 4hr15 so will the duties be any bigger ?

How about, Royal Mail, our union, just stop trying to get a pint into a quart pot, in other words, cut yet more staff, cut yet more duties, and our workload increases, and our jobs become almost impossible to do.

Of course the mandatory parts of the national agreement if endorsed by the membership will apply but the span will be down to your office to agree. But vanman is right if you dont want longer spans how do you fill a full time job duty up if you have walk sequencing in place and due to the changes in the workplan your IPS has reduced and your prep was sequenced then it would also reduce prep time. That is the dilemma we all face. Of course no one wants longer spans but equally most want a full time job so its a differcult choice.

Wranglered your info is very wrong.
Our office has around 150 workers of which 120 will be FT. If we dont agree to delivery span changes then we will still have 90 FT, RM cannot take our FT contracts away. Maybe new entrants will be PT but why should we who are already FT bother about that? The CWU model whilst having more FT workers will have infinitely less workers overall at least our model gives more work to more people.

Dingo you say make your branch known of how the members are feeling, and your rite thats were we must start.

But you my friend are in a very privileged position were you can also put our points across from the threads on this site. What we put up on here is what the feelings like on the shop floor aswell regarding these issues.

I dont know the answers mate but surely theres a better option than longer deliveries .

This is an unfair question dingo and well you know it.
First off all we would need to accept yours and RMs position that the indoor wokload will shrink considerably and to be honest we don't.
Secondly and just as important, our experience is in the preparation and delivery of mail not business planning.
But we do have far more experience than you when it comes to walking the streets for 3.5-4hrs.
We know what is phisically possible and what is NOT.
As far as this site is concerned,I have had far more contact with you dingo than my own branch, who seem to be difficult to contact at the moment.
If it was up to me i would make membership of this message board compulsory for all senior union officials.
good times, bad times you know I've had my share

I would definitely go for that - why aren't you negotiating - that's a vote winner - it certainly beats longer delivery span, more D2Ds. It would certainly help those on a 4 day week.

They talk out of their rump. What IS needed is for them to get out on a delivery outside of London, with perhaps 600 rural drops, 20% households, packets coming out of your backside and torrential rain and see if they'd like to do that for 5 hours a day, 5 days a week, 48 weeks of the year.

How can we do longer spans though?
I understand about keeping jobs but there has to be some physical limit to what a man can do day in and day out.
If there was no indoor except prepping, would it be feasible for us to do say 6 hours out on the street ?

Any health and safety reps on here?

Was the current max span limit only 3.5 hours because we carry bags on our shoulders? (We use trolleys and bikes so that doesn't happen anyway!)
If it wasn't, then how can something that wasn't deemed safe before now be acceptable?
