It's a fair wage but not brilliant. If you take off your 40mins paid meal relief (full time staff) thats about £9.50 an hour. Go to the job centre and try and get an unskilled job for that sort of money.

You could become a banking chief exec, no skills no qualifications and f**k up to the tune of £800 billion and still get a six figure bonus. :chuckle

It's a fair wage in an unfairly paid society. It's not enough but compared to some others it's a lot better.
Minimum wage agency work springs to mind. I bet you get paid more than the casuals that come in your office, that's what you should be comparing it to.

we're on a very good wage, go and get a job in a shop, pub, hotel or virtually anywhere else and see if we are underpaid then.

Although a manual job with a lot of knowledge needed we are not paid enough. £2000 more a year is needed if you wanted to provide for a family. Justifications for a pay rise could be the need to deal with managers who have mood swings that are to close together, have higher than normal levels of paranoia, who can't control the urge to panic very well, and are unable to communicate verbally or in writing. Combine this with overwieght bags/boxes, broken or missing equipment, tipping out bags to find chips and kebabs all over the letters or a syringe and there's my argument for £2000. Change to a team leader system in mail centres, that would save £50 million a year.

I'd have thought the trust angle should have entitled us to more pay.
I don't think RM vet people like they used to for criminal records and the like.
I've come across some right dodgy characters in my time in the business.

I think the measure of a fair wage is one which does not need supplementing by government benefits. How many in your offices are on working tax credits?

It's not bad pay but it also is not great for what a delivery postman goes through, i guess it depends where you live, in Yorkshire for example it might be good, i live on the south coast where the cost of living is quite high, no London allowance for me.

bulls**t some great comments about how lucky we are compared to some, what a lot of pi*h why do people always compare themselves to people lets fortunate rather than the more fortunate, i for one am worth more than the Queen so does that mean i can count myself hard done by,we should be raising the standard for all not trying to group everybody in the low paid bracket, wake up about 5% of this country has nearly all the wealth is that right?are they worth it? do they care?

considering what we used to earn at xmas yes low paid
compared to 10 yrs ago
i reckon im down about £600 over 3 week xmas press
due to erosion of otime rates via sdd agreements rem sat allowances there gone double time etc
you wouldnt have long sats if hourly rates of old were in place
over last 5yrs it has been a systematic attack on terms and condtions otime rate is laughable
rem every hour saved goes into mgmt bonus pots
this has been planned and implemented between govmt rm and yes our union for years now
political backhanders please i just wish someone would go public and tell the truth to public
dont believe me just check your p60 ,s from years ago thats your tax returns form
i bet you earned more 10 yrs ago check it out especially posties 15+ yrs
its all one global plan destroying all wages and terms built by ourselves over years to be attacked by those in positions
of power to cascade down the line to even line mgmt.
g.orwell,s animal farm didnt get a look in compared to this global coruption.
public services are doomed eventually everything will be put out to tender to the lowest bidder

That's not really an accurate measure. The minimum wage is £5.80ph, but there is no maximum - hence the 'average' will always be skewed towards a higher amount than the majority of people actually get.

If you think near £20k a year is low for an unskilled job, just go and have a look in your local job centre and see how much skilled tradesmen are being offered.
That's exactly the response people like Mandelson, Crozier, love to hear. I do think that less than £20,000 per annum, for what we do, in all weathers, is low. If we weren't being ripped off left right and centre by the fat cats who now control our gas, electric, council tax, groceries, you might have a point, as it is, we are facing increases in the cost of living, therefor we need our wages to keep pace.

Are we low paid? Well, I consider that for the amount of effort we have put into our everyday working lives compared to our managers (immediate and above), I'd have to say, yes we are. What exactly do management have to do all day? I'm thinking especially of the likes of Mr Tolhurst who has the audacity to suggest that we don't already work the hours that we are paid for. I wonder how keen he would be to have his daily workload examined. It must be so hard for him to "work" his way through all those business breakfasts and lunches. If he was to get his fat arse down to the front-line this week and see what the foot-soldiers have to endure especially in the current weather conditions he might have some idea of what a real days work actually entails.

Do you know, that is what really gets on my nerves. He hasn't got a bloody clue. Well, let me clarify that. He probably has but he will never express it because status and wealth generally end up corrupting any integrity a person had to some degree.
