Parwich postie makes his last delivery

A POSTMAN who has delivered mail to the people of Parwich for the past 11 years has been honoured for his contribution.

Simon Ring was celebrated at a touching farewell ceremony held in St Peter’s Church before his last scheduled delivery round on January 2.

Over the years Mr Ring had become the familiar face who ensured parcels and letters reached their intended destinations come rain or shine in the village.

And well-wishers from the community turned out in their droves to bid their community postman farewell.

Mr Ring said: “I was told it was going to be a rather easy going affair, with a cup of tea and a few mince pies.

“But when I got there I was quite surprised to see so many people in the church so it was really nice to be so well-supported.

“I have made a lot of friends in Parwich so the villagers won’t be seeing the last of me. I plan to spend a lot more time with my family after I retire. It has been 11 years to the dot since I became the Parwich postman and around 40 years since I joined the post service.” Following a delightful carol service, Parwich resident Martin Compton gave a speech in honour of Mr Ring’s value to the community before announcing a special delivery was in store.

At which point, a bicycle ridden by young delivery boy ‘Bert’ travelled up the central aisle and handed a special envelope to Mr Ring.

Inside was a donation of £400 from the community as well as a card featuring an aerial picture of the village and eight pages of messages from well-wishers.

Mr Compton said: “Simon is the sort of postman that would go to extra lengths to ensure deliveries were made.

“No matter what the weather, the villagers could rest assured they would receive their mail on time and he will be greatly missed by the entire community.”
