AN Oldham postie's ‘nerdy obsession’ with Lego finally paid off after he was offered his dream job as master builder at the new Legoland Discovery Centre.
In what was billed as 'the toughest job interview in the world' Alex Bidolak, 22, from Chadderton, impressed a master model builder from Berlin, and 60 children from a primary school during the auditions.

His new role will include creating new seasonal models, repairing the existing models and working with the hundreds of children expected to pass through the doors to build with Lego bricks.

An understandably over the moon Alex said: "This is the toughest job interview I have ever had, but it has all been worth it as I get to play with Lego all day long. It is my dream job and am really looking forward to starting in the new year."

Alex has been hooked on Lego since he was seven years old and was given his first Lego set.

He now boasts hundreds of sets containing tens of thousands of individual bricks.

Alex's obsession made him the butt of many jokes amongst his friends, and his mum and dad even threatened to kick him out when his collection spread from his bedroom to the loft and elsewhere in the house.

In the first stage of the job interview Alex was tasked with building two models in a strict time limit. Alex built a brilliant goose and a fantastic likeness of Ryan Giggs, BBC Sports Personality of the Year 2009.

The second round involved going to the Firs Primary School in Sale where 60 children of different ages tested Alex’s teaching skills by building mini Christmas reindeer models.

It was here Legoland chief knew they had their man.

Neil Crittenden, general manager of the Legoland Discovery Centre, said: "Alex is a very talented model builder and is great with children. I think the audition process has really stretched Alex and the other participants but we have found a fantastic addition to the team."

A former pupil of Our Lady’s School in Royton, Alex studied graphic design at Oldham Sixth Form College and later at Manchester Metropolitan University, where he also incorporated his love of Lego into some of his projects.

For the past two years Alex has worked as a postman.

Legoland Discovery Centre will open at Barton Square at the Trafford Centre in March 2010.

The first of its kind in the UK, the centre will also offer an exciting themed ride, a tour of a Lego factory where children can help make their own Lego brick.
