A former DHL international cashier accused of defrauding the company of US$179 000 was yesterday acquitted after the State failed to find incriminating evidence against him.

Godfrey Masamvi (33) who was represented by Mr Nickel Mushangwe of Mushangwe and Company had pleaded not guilty to 75 counts of fraud when his trial opened recently before regional magistrate Mr William Bhila.

However, the court cleared Masamvi after the State failed to prove a solid case against him at the close of the prosecution case.

"The court will not hesitate to acquit accused persons if the State does not prove its case beyond reasonable doubt even if the probabilities are that the accused committed the offence charged," ruled Mr Bhila.

The State was alleging that sometime in January and February this year, Masamvi hatched a plan to steal cash he received from the customer service point staff and converted it to his own use.
