Billy......they cant go straight to discipline under the MUP process....they have go give staff every opportunity to improve....the harsh fact is some feel they dont have to bother....
I think its unfair to tar managers with the same brush......Ours is not too bad at all......and to be frank....if you cant be bothered to ask 3 questions when someone is posting an item then something should be done. With the last lot of strikes our specials went up massively and so did the bonus.....so if your not asking...you are costing ME money...which I can ill afford to lose right now!
What a sad testimony to our managers/leaders that they have to resort to threats, and disciplinary action, rather than persuade and motivate with the power of their argument. Most of us have been serving customers for a long time, and know when and what to ‘sell’. We are moving away from allowing people to use their skills in the best interests of everyone, and if this continues we shall surely fail.

Making a nice little bonus off of the backs of our striking colleagues over at RM. How much did you put into their hardship fund through your local union branch?
If you tell a lie big enough and keep repeating it, people will eventually come to believe it.

Was it asking the question that caused the Specials to go up, or the strikes? How many times do you ask the question, and what percentage of these customers actually genuinely change their mind and want/need the service you have sold them?

Well said – like so many other things at the moment, both within our business and in the wider world, there are some dubious moralities about.
I'm not going to deny it helped Billy...but like our RM colleagues who strike to secure their jobs, and quite right too if they feel that is the right course of action, I want to secure mine...what I was trying to highlight, was the fact if we can increase our specials by asking simple questions, then that will help us too..
As for your question of how much did I put in the hardship fund....the answer is simple......nothing...
How much did my Royal Mail colleagues give me during the 9 days of strike action I took in 2007....the same answer...nothing..... would be interested to see if anyone got anything from the posties?
BFO....I reckon about 1 in 15 change....thats not a bad ratio....and I would suggest the rise was largly due to the strike, but we have maintained a much higher level of specials now since pre strike days..

So instead of taking the moral high ground and doing the right thing, you didn't cough up because they might not have, 2 years ago!?

But I have never been financially supported by RM staff in any strike I have been on. ( can anyone on this forum say they have been?)...and to be perfectly honest I dont take strinking lightly, but when I do, I do it because I believe in what we are fighting for...and I dont want handouts from others to do it.
We are moving off the point here though...managers cant just discipline you for not having a conversation.. however if after regular documented coaching where you agree to ask the questions yet still dont then they have grounds to go down a formal route...
But in all honesty..why would it have to get that far.....those of us in the job for years take pride in making sure we give the customer the " right" service, not just what they ask for....its always been the case....but come on.....its 3 simple questions...why not just ask them??

Look, I agree on all those points fella, I work on the counter, I personally have the right conversations etc etc and as far as I know the managers are happy with my input, but I am also a counters rep. I have a region that covers a dozen or so offices and I can assure you that I have colleagues in a number of offices that are on the informal stage, stage 1 and stage 2 MUP that by DOCUMENTATION are having the correct conversations and the managers are still pressing forward blindly because those same counter workers 'are not having enough successes' with the CORRECT conversation! And this is across the board, not just SD. This is not just in my area, it is spreading elsewhere, like a cancer. Ask your rep if you can pop along to the next territorial meeting up at CWU headquarters with them, you will be amazed at the 'shenanigans' we fight day in day out...

Well its good to see we are both fighting for the same cause...maybe I will if I get the chance!
Maybe im lucky....and do have a decent manager who understands the score, and if your having the right conversations and making the effort she will back you all the way....but we do have a couple who are playing the game, and frankly are peeing the rest of us off...and these are now being challenged....
I promise you it will be far from the dismissal stage before they start performing...
Then all I can say is, those of you in your office that ARE having the correct conversation better hope that your manager doesn't get the memo about 'success ratios' anytime soon!
Just down the road I have 2 offices that seem to be going this way, whereas my own office/manager doesn't have a clue about all this!
Seems we both can count our lucky stars...

I feel at times that we mis sell the special delivery, Exp to people who cannot understand very much english. You can see some think it is the standard price, where do you stop, if you tried to backtrack and go back to 1st class you would fail. You can telll a lot by body langugue.

Spot on. If you put people under pressure they will start miss selling, and in the long run that will result in greater damage.
