Pensioner's life saved by hero postman

A HERO postman saved the life of an elderly Swindon woman while delivering her Christmas post.

Royal Mail worker Simon Goodall was on his daily round when he pushed a handful of Christmas cards through the letterbox belonging to Mrs Pope, 88, who lives in Bessemer Road West, Rodbourne Cheney.

When he noticed thick smoke coming from a number of rooms downstairs he knocked on the front door and called the fire brigade.

The confused pensioner eventually came to the door and Mr Goodall made sure she was safe with a female neighbour. Her cooker was on fire.

A Wiltshire Fire and Rescue spokeswoman said Mrs Pope could have died from breathing in the deadly smoke if it wasn’t for the actions of Mr Goodall last Monday.

In a twist of fate Mr Goodall told the Swindon Advertiser he was only delivering at about 1.30pm that day as the Christmas postal rush had begun to kick in. Otherwise he said he may have been at the property much earlier.

But the 35-year-old postman from Faringdon, was modest about his intervention.

The dad-of-one said: “I popped open the letterbox and a load of smoke hit me.

“I called the fire brigade straight away. Mrs Pope came to the door and she had no idea what was going on.

“I think she was quite upset I was knocking on her door.

“She was looked after a neighbour three doors down.

“I was just in the right place at the right time. Any one else would have done the same as me.

“It’s not like I ripped open my shirt and had a Superman S on my chest.”

But Louise Knox, spokeswoman for Wiltshire Fire & Rescue, said Mr Goodall deserved praise.

She said: “The elderly lady was treated by paramedics at the scene and was then taken to the Great Western Hospital.

“Crews had been called after smoke was seen inside the house. The old lady could have died – not from the fire but from smoke inhalation.”

The Swindon Advertiser was unable to contact Mrs Pope. Neighbours said she is very frail woman and it would be unlikely she would want to speak of her lucky escape.
