I've had lots of DOMs in my 30 years in the job- some I've liked as people and some I haven't. But I wouldn't trust any of them as they are watching their own backs and if push comes to shove they will do you up like a kipper.

I always reckon they are like MFI furniture. They come in an assortment of styles and colours but strip away the veneer and you've got the same chipboard underneath

............... ....you can say that about any person in life

I don't know because, in my experence I have stood up for the posties....and not had to watch my back, depends on the Integrity of the dom

RM can not just get rid of you if you don't agree what they are doing ...there are employer laws that they well aware of....if you dont trust any of the doms in 30 years that's up to you as an individual...... and its pretty sad to be honest.

K979...I could not agree with you more....why did Royal Mail Fail to act upon that report????

I think that this is a massive massive issue, and unfortunitly Royal Mail have failed to address that issue, there are Managers that should not be Managing simple as that.
But......how do RM deal with it ....that is another issue......I know Managers that should not be in the job, totally uesless But THEY ARE STILL PICKING UP THEIR BONUSES still doing a job they are incapable of doing.....this really makes my blood boil.... and the posites, some that I know have to put up with it

its.Totally, Totally wrong......here we have senior managment on Serious money, that could not run a piss up in a Brewery....sorry but thats how it coming across jumping from on report to another instead of simply listening to the people who do the job, and acting on it.

Again A total waste of money the Sawyer report.....but time and time again Rm senior managment fail to take heed.

I simply don't know my DOM well enough to say i trust him,do i like him? yes,he's okay.
Do i respect him,NO.
Far too many managers at all levels are simply out of their depth, incompetent, and would not be capable of
attaining the same position in another company,Until RM address this, things will never change.

HI robd.... I hear what you’re saying, but getting to know your DOM takes time and is a two way venture between both sides

DOM'S have to earn respect and this takes time again it is a two way venture.

There are DOMS I know that are out of their depth, for sure

The main aspect I think of a DOM in my view if he’s going to cut the mark is basic people management skills which some fail to have, either you've got it or you haven't but that’s not rocket science, or something you learn out of a book.

Its something that is a basic trait that we humans all have....treating people decently and being polite...it costs nothing...But it has cost RM a lot.

But it is not just royalmail is it look at British Airways the UK BANKING INDUSTRY i firmly believe it is a class issue in those who think they know best through the privileges they were born in to think that the world owes them a living/profit of the backs of the many!. FOR HOW MUCH MONEY DOES ANYONE NEED BEFORE GREED :cfo :lfo :mfo WHILE A SERVICE TO OUR NATION IS DESTROYED IN THE NAME OF PROFIT AND GREED!.

Like most who've done a few years, I've come across a fair few DOMs in my nearly 20 years in the job. The one when I first started was a legend. More like a Dad than a boss! This may take some believing now, but at Christmas we used to have a whip-round for him. Yes, you did read that correctly! And then on Christmas eve, he'd bring in loads of cans, even a bottle of scotch! I remember one occasion, something came up that I wanted to do one Saturday, which I found out about the night before. So, I looked him up in the phone book, rang him at home and asked for tomorrow off. His answer was 'No problem, I'll sort it!' Can you imagine that now?

We're between Line Managers at the moment - our last one got moved on to sort out another unit in the same DO. He has been in the job about 20 years, same as me, and has been a manager for the last two. I've heard from someone I know who worked with him when he was a Postie in his old office that he was a real back-stabber. He worked every strike and would tell the managers some walks were too small! In fact, with credentials like that it's a wonder it took him 18 years to go over to the dark side!

I tend to take people as I find them, and over the years we've had some good managers and some bad. Do I trust them? On the whole, no, but it depends on the individual.

At the moment, we've got a female DOM, who bats her eyelids at you when she wants something (ie absorbing), but can be a right bitch. The way she talks down to some of the line managers has to be heard to be believed! Still, as they say, s**t rolls down hill. She no doubt gets bullied by her manager, so she bullies the line managers, who in turn bully us!

The peter principle is true for all companies and all employees with any power, not just RM. It's just worse here :whistle
Run, rabbit run. Dig that hole, forget the sun.
And when at last the work is done. Don't sit down, it's time to dig another one
