also what was interesting is geo route said the walk was 4 miles give or take, then after checking what the postie actually walked it turns out to be 6 and he didn't even complete.

now that's two miles lost through a computer program that you would imagine would be spot on. i dont know much about this sort of thing but for what it cost, you would imagine in today's world of technology a computer program would have no problems calculating simple figures ie distance of walk , amount of stops and time allocated etc..

oh no i've gone cross eyed

what im getting at is somewhere down the line something is very wrong if 2+ miles can just be lost . either the program itself is seriously broken or the figures we're given are not the figures entered into the program. im guessing its the latter just from experience. still an important question if you ask me as it can only be one or the other.

all in all a very good program me thinks. was pretty shocked that they nailed it so spot on. watched it with non RM friends and as posted by others they were shocked and now understand why i go on so much lol. even promised to not get on at me next time we're out and they cant keep up with my walking pace.

props to the posties that were brave enough to go on camera and just hope they get the support from their colleges that they deserve.

If we think its bad now what will it be like when we get the new even longer walks that people like dingo are trying to sell us. If an ex marine struggled with one of our 3.5 hour walk's how does R/M and the CWU think people over forty will manage with even more work and longer walk's.
Maybe we should ask them to show us how they would manage it day in day out week after week.

I think RM and the CWUs dreams of a longer delivery span may have disappeared in the space of a 30min TV programme.
It may be time for a rethink. :pray

Tolhurst.....Hatchet man, go back to Plasterboard ....what you know about.....how can he tell a postie for 20 odd years how to do the job,

He has no experience himself.... its fine him talking the talk, I would like to see him get off his lazy fat arse and do a walk in the time with all the extras That he is asking, day in day out, rain shine, infact he don't give a s**t about any of us .

I could not believe it when he said about us being paid for the hours we do... Bollocks.....I am certain HE does not work the hours he should and what value does he add to our customers...f**k All.

You could get rid of him save £££££££ and it would make no difference to RM what so ever

He is just an one of those OVERPAID UNDER WORKED HATCHET MEN who are on a nice big fat salary sucking up a nice big fat bonus for doing f**k all....Oh...yes he is sorry....Making a complete Bollocks up of what used to be a good job!

can we have one of these :cfo for Tolhurst Please!!

Sorry to go off topic well its still keeping to the topic really on longer deliveries.

This is what was said to me and my opo today by a very reliable source that come sometime in Jan park/loop for walks over a mile away from D/O for walks closer to home motorised HCTS delivery span 4.30-5.00 .You do all the packets for 2.5 walks all regs possibly reverting back to two deliveries for offices that want to, doing mail in the morning packets in the afternoon.

As i said to him your joking the Union arnt going to back this one and he seemed to be taken aback by my response and i will stick by my original response this is not the way forward for us 5.0 hr delivery come on get in the real world FFS if this does happen i will feel very let down by the CWU hierachy this is not a good deal for anyone.

So if your lucky enough to have a van at least you can have a P*SS in the back if you have a HCT start taking up yoga so you can stuff yourself into it and contort your body in away that you can have a P*SS .

If the CWU think the members will back this 5hr delivery span idea then they are even more out of touch then I thought.

Up my road the issue is not whether a 3.5 hour walk can be done it can its wether the walk should be timed at 4 miles per hour. The Union has argued against this constantly and who do you think was repsonsible for the panaorma programes knowledege of things .

However up my road dont be so niave because we know in some parts of the country they have agreed not been forced to go to a longer span becauses Royal Mail have offered to upgrade staff to full time from part time.

Look the issue of spans are not going to be determind by a national agreement, that wll be down to local negotations as of course offices will want to determind the levels of full time jobs and earnings and work methods.

However we have had health and safety enigneers who have analyised and concluded that it is safer to walk 4 hours on a walk without a bag on the shoulder then it is to perform 3.5 hours with a bag on the shoulder. The issue is what the deliery method is.

Now the fact is that Royal Mail are stating that every walk in a delivery office more than 1 mile from an office appox 15 miniutes will be a car derived van walk.

Now Up my road explain to me has the 3.5 hour span maintained full time jobs in the industry since 2003 ? No it has not full time jobs in some regions are now running over 50% of the total staff.

In London where we have had traditionally the lowest levels and we have fought to protect full time jobs , we are now in London facing a lot of pressure due to Royal Mails 3 year standirised perfromance policy.

But I am intrigued, we can all argue about whether traffic is right , we are doing an agreed audit in two offices in London to see whether their mist system and the count for the remainder of the mail is accurate. There is noise on both sides as some mech is which is long coded has already been counted by mist but in a delivery office we tend to recount it as its just another tray. But we are confident of finding if Nine Elms mail centre and East London are accurately recording traffic by this count.

However if you want to stop and guard the 3.5 hour span fine , but tell me how you protect a full time job. Even if we take 30 mins off for travelling to and from the office , 40 mins for a break , that still leaves 3 hours 20 of work of which is going to be subjected to a different arrival pattern into delivery offiices and sequenced in the future. Even if we get 20 mins per day off the working week that leaves 3 hours of workload to be ulitised.

I understand those who are argue for the status quo , thats fine but we have a history of missing the boat on issues. I remember when people used to argue for streaming and a 09 30 last letter for the first delivery. That led us to deliverying pratically 95% of the mail on the first delivery and then in some areas having just one second delivery for every every 6 first deliveries and the first attack on full time jobs. It took us 7 years to realise that one delivery was the only way forward in the future and we put back lots of full time jobs. But now because more work is being meched then previously we have to think how do we protect full time jobs in the future.

No one in the union is agreeing to the 4 mph test for deliveries its nonsecnce, But the union also have a duty to observe from reports accross the country how we can protect jobs in the future and with increased automation it is the indoor element which is under risk , so do we lengthen the outdoor element to ensure protection. Or does the union do nothing and let all offices recieve proposals in the future based on this question.
