A POSTMAN suffered cuts to his neck when he rode into a piece of fishing wire that had been tied across a busy Doncaster street.

The postie was travelling at low speed on the footpath about 2pm on December 2 when he struck the wire, stretched across Sharon St and Church Rd.

The postal worker sustained minor injuries, but police say the incident could have been fatal in different circumstances.

Sen-Constable Paul Basinski said police took the matter very seriously and urged anyone with information to come forward.

“We are looking at footage from nearby closed-circuit cameras and are doorknocking neighbouring residents,” Sen-Constable Basinski said.

“This could have been a life-threatening situation if someone had been travelling at a high speed and crashed into the invisible wire.”

The fishing wire was wrapped around power poles on either side of Sharon St and sat at head height.

Sen-Constable Basinski said the wire was put up in a street close to a school, putting the lives of young children and students at risk.

He said those responsible could face reckless conduct and conduct endangering life charges, which carry maximum penalties of 10 years’ imprisonment.

Why not, it doesnt say pavement it says footpath, maybe bikes are allowed too.

Its in Australia - I thought it was Doncaster in England when I posted it - so it might be legal there.

It's legal in parts of UK too. I go to Watford regularly to see relatives, and I'm
always taken aback by the cyclists riding on the pavements. It seems to be
encouraged there with cycle paths marked on some sections of the pavement.
I guess it must be down to local byelaws.
