UN calls for postal sector to reduce emissions

The head of the Bern-based Universal Postal Union has urged postal services around the world to reduce their CO2 emissions.

Edouard Dayan’s call for action comes after the UPU – the United Nations specialised agency for postal services – reported that it estimates at least 26 million tonnes of C02 emissions were produced by its 191 members’ postal vehicles and buildings in 2008.

A statement from the UPU’s headquarters said that on the eve of the World Climate Conference in Copenhagen, the sector was committed to helping curb climate change and finding more eco-friendly ways to process and deliver mail items.

It added that postal services, employing more than five million people, operated a global network of more than 600,000 post offices and almost one million postal vehicles.

The UN estimates total annual worldwide greenhouse gas emissions at 38 billion tonnes, meaning that postal operations produce 0.07 per cent of these emissions.

“The UPU will work with all its partners, including the UN Environment Programme, to encourage the polluters of today and tomorrow to reduce their environmental impact in the long term,” Dayan said.

Some emissions can be reduced with little or no effort at all. Imagine spending Christmas pressure next to someone who constantly eats beans in the Canteen
Seriously its time to take the pressure of the postmen. Increased mechanisation was supposed to improve working conditions. All it has done is add to the greenhouse gases and created conditions and places familiar in the time of the Industrial Revolution.

Opening up the parcels and mail to competition means 3 or more vans travel to companies where one was enough. (more CO2) This is only from the Royal Mail alone.

A machine breaks down and instead of one or two in-house engineers a squadron of vans arrive from the engineering department. (more CO2)

Instead of one OMV travelling between towns and overnight trains, we have distribution centres, airport hubs, and streamline hubs that require many vehicles to 'concentrate' the mails, send them by plane to the other end of the country, and then transport them 100's of miles by road. All because the next town 10 miles away falls within a different district. (more CO2)

What about jobs? There will be more jobs created if there was less machinery. We wouldn't have to work next to huge dust creating monsters. There will be more much smaller greener vehicles on the road and with the Government's help only one delivery/collection vehicle sent to companies.

All this will keep the EU very happy on the subject of emissions leaving us to worry about what the guy ate in the Canteen

Now where does the EU stand on monopolies? (there's no pleasing some folk)
