Dear Granny Smith - a new book by postal blogger Roy Mayall
Hello everyone, I just wanted to make people aware of the fact that I have a new book out. Called Dear Granny Smith: A Letter From Your Postman it describes working for the Royal Mail 30 years ago, and compares that to today. It is a tale of deceit and loss and of the slow decay of a cherished institution. It is partly based on that London Review of Books article which went all over the web during the strike, but has a lot more material too. Mostly it is just about the ordinary life of us postal workers, with a wry look at what "modernisation" might mean. I've been checking on the web, and the cheapest copy can be bought from the Guardian on-line bookshop. You can read reviews and get the link to the Guardian site on my blog, here: http://roymayall.wordpress.com/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; Let me know what you think by leaving a comment. I hope everyone likes it.

Don't know about dirty linen norbert. Sometimes musty things just need an airing.

They must love you Norbert - plugging them at every opportunity. You sure you're not Mark White?

No he's more like Mark Twain
"Get your facts first, then you can distort them as you please."
Mark Twain
And to anyone who says that Mark Twain has been dead for 99 years, I use the Hellmail motto "Never let the truth get in the way of a good story"
Bravery isn’t not being afraid. Bravery is being afraid but doing it anyway

Hi Roy,
We just listened to your piece on Radio 4 and enjoyed it very much. It will be interesting to hear if many of our friends listened as most are Radio 4 addicts. At least one is a raging Tory so we will see if he can bring himself to listen to the rest of the weeks' programs.
Mind you, your description of life in a small delivery office is quite different to those of us who worked in a large multi function office.
Looking forward to tomorrow.

just read roy mayalls book last night, brilliant, true to its word, and depressing to think how the job was, how it is now, the management these days really are a bunch o bumholes, my only regret is not banging in thousands of easy hours of overtime back then, when it was a doddle, could have retired by now, instead, i chose to slumber every afternoon- phffff,
