Postman facing prison over discarded mail

A postman who dumped and hid more than 500 letters because he "had a hard week" has been warned that he faces a jail term.

Gavin Bryce, 29, was caught after council litter wardens investigating reports of fly-tipping found a "number" of letters discarded at an unofficial coup, Falkirk Sheriff Court was told.

Post Office investigators were called in and found another 499 undelivered letters stashed in Bryce's house and car.

Joanne Smith, prosecuting, said Bryce had worked for the Royal Mail as a postie between October 2008 and July 2009.

The depute fiscal said: "Between October 2008 and July 2009, the accused had a delivery job at the Falkirk Delivery Office.

"On the 15th July environmental officers found a quantity of postal packets at a fly-tipping site in Falkirk. They should have been delivered by the accused. The accused stated he had only done it two or three times at the very most."

Ms Smith added: "He stated he had had a hard week at work and that it was too much for him. On searching his home address and car, 499 postal packets were discovered."

Bryce, of Gardrum Gardens, Shieldhall, Falkirk pleaded guilty to failing to deliver the post. His not guilty to theft of post was accepted.

Sheriff Craig Caldwell deferred sentence until January for a social background report and an assessment of Bryce's suitability to perform community service as a possible direct alternative to jail.

Sheriff Caldwell said: "This is a serious offence, and I will require reports before making my decision. It is a very large number of postal packets. You were in a position of trust, and were entrusted to make sure these letters arrived at their destination, but many failed to arrive.

"I'm sure some of these letters were of some value and importance, but for some reason you decided not to deliver them."

Bloody news, it's Shieldhill, not Shieldhall.

Does anyone know what route he done in the Falkirk district?? A lot of my mail had been gone missing over the last while, was wondering if this was maybe why?!

He is 19 not 29. He was doing a North Polmont run and It was flyer advertisements he dumped not envelopes.
His family were going through hard times as his parents split and are no longer living in Shieldhill.

He was 18 at the time of the incident. So imo forgivable

Someone did similar at our office a few years back - horded bags and bags, opened some of the mail too and yes he got sacked obviously, but nothing legal against him unbelievably!
