Man escapes punishment after hitting postie

A postman was punched to the ground after waking up a resident with ‘loud banging’.

Police were called to an address in Clarendon Street, Bedford, on November 12, after the 56-year-old employee was assaulted by a man.

A spokesman for Bedfordshire Police said that the matter had been resolved by a ‘restorative disposal’ meaning that both parties had agreed there would be no further action.

They said that the man had been woken up by ‘loud banging’ and that there was then a ‘verbal altercation’.

They added: “The offender then punched the man causing him to fall to the ground. Both parties met with each other and the police and agreed to a restorative disposal.” She said that this way of dealing with minor incidents had recently been formally introduced.

A Royal Mail spokesman said: “An incident took place which the Police and Royal Mail managers attended. The matter was resolved at the scene and the postman was able to complete his deliveries.

The managers appologised on behalf of the postman for knocking his door for the 'special delivery' and gave him a 'book of first class stamps' ????

So exactly what are we meant to do with SDs, exactly how loud are we meant to knock on a door, "the postman didn't knock i would have heard him, he just put a card through."

And of course if the 'postie' had knocked the resident to the ground it would likewise have been resolved with a handshake and no further action being taken.

So will Royal Mail offer self defence classes now? Royal mail recognises a risk to its employes it can't ignore or RM will be leaving themselves wide open for legal reasons, Health and safety etc?

I think this story points out the folly of arguing with someone on their doorstep, there is no point in shouting back at someone, it's easier to just walk away and avoid the situation (plus it does help if anything happens that you did the correct thing in walking away to try to diffuse the situation).

Surely ‘verbal altercation’ is the resident's version, as told to the police, of the civilised discussion that took place.
Nobody suggested the postie "shouted" and if the resident didn't want to be disturded he shouldn't have had a knocker on his door.

i have had a customer complain i knocked to loud ( a few years back) she phoned the DOM to complain and he said he'd rather she complain about that, than he didn't knock...............he said she was dumbstruck at his reply and hung up.............never heard from her again

I'm very surprised the postie forgave and wants to forget, I for one would pay the offender a visit after work hours :lfo

I think ? - correct me if I'm wrong , the Police institutionally don't like getting involved as it's supposed to be a civil matter and they'll say it's someone's word against the other in court .

You're right in the sense if one of them agrees to " restorative disposal " - he'll come over as " reasonable " , the Copper might have put the wind up one ?

That's my experience of " Pikey Problems "locally that I've had recently . Can't spell rights but are very cute . Sometimes in my darkest moments I wonder if Hitler was half right .

No postie is safe now, all the offender has to do is apologise infront of the Police and claim they were provoked by verbal abuse from the postie. The guy is probablly laughing his head off right now telling all his mates he knocked down the postie and got away with it.

The 60's / Scottish style policing would be better for that offender - he could " have fallen down the stairs " or been bounced off the walls . Less waste of public funds and no appearance in front of the beak .

It is all arse about face these days and some know the system better than the authorities .
