:no no Winston Churchill's speech for Burslem to the DOM's

We shall go on to the end, we shall fight in the D.O’s, we shall fight on the picket lines and around the braziers, we shall fight with growing confidence and growing strength in the air, we shall defend our Island, whatever the cost may be, we shall fight on the beaches, we shall fight on the landing grounds, we shall fight in the fields and in the streets, we shall fight in the hills; we shall never surrender

Nice to see so many new faces on the picketline aswell as the regulars ,the only reason for that is that Dave is such a respected pensioner in our office.
Got to be in it to win it!!! :so there :so there :so there :arrrghhh

For those who don't know me from these boards. I am a former management employee of RM. I worked in Ops for a while and then in various non-ops management roles. I saw at first hand how some strikes were managed and how things work behind the scenes.

I am basing all my views on what you have written and with my experience.

1. It seems the origin as usual comes from an attempt by management to change working practices and frontline employees not happy about those changes.
2. Management pissed off and something happens (possibly contrived, though usually something fairly innocent then becomes the straw that broke the camels back - i.e. this case)
3. Management are instructed and advised by employee relations (Jon Millidge was the head of this 12 months ago, with Tom Melvin Director of Ops)
4. If you go on an unoffical strike you are likely to get done over as in the case of Oxford with the line about going back on different terms as stated in some rules somewhere.
5. If this strike escalates regionally then Dir of Employee relations and your Union heads have a chat and resolve things
6. If Dave succeeds at tribunal it will only stave off the fight over working practices.

As said on other boards in here standing together is your best bet, but you will be forced at some stage to change working practices once a settlement is agreed with the union heads. They will then be bound by a verbal agreement for these things to go in smoothly. This happened with Single Daily Delivery.

The vision behind this overall approach came in with Allan Leighton and his Margaret Thatcher view that he will not be broken by the unions. This is why management have to go and cover these rounds.

Please also note that management in all parts of the business has been reduced by tens of thousands over the last several years and whilst you might be pissed off about changes they have annually gone through re-applications for their jobs. This has excluded frontline operational management.

All I say is by all means support and stand together in solidarity, but in my experience the National Union Reps will screw you over. Management will screw you over. You are the one's who lose your pay, not your national union reps, frontline management used to get overtime during strikes, but that got taken away (everyone gets screwed by the company!)

To me it's a lose now keep your pay, or stick it out and do not give in even if the union says right we're going back to work. Don't trust anyone except yourselves to back you through this.

You may also note: Gillian Alford who is to leave the BBC after nine years to join Royal Mail Letters as Director of Industrial Relations! She will be getting involved somewhere if things escalate.

I also think Doug Neal does not come from an RM background and might have come from Unipart, which means he is fairly in-experienced in this and most external Area General Managers have not succeeded!

Challenge, ask, accuse, support whatever you like and I'll try and help anyway I can
