Police said on Tuesday the dog that savaged a four-year-old boy in Liverpool to death was an illegal pit bull type terrier and apologised for not chasing up warnings about the house where the attack occurred. John Paul Massey died after from injuries after being attacked by the dog at a house in the Wavertree area of the city on Monday while a 63-year-old woman who tried to stop the animal was injured. The dog was destroyed at the scene.
Police said an independent expert has confirmed the dog was a prohibited breed under the Dangerous Dogs Act which bans the possession of certain types of dogs that are bred for fighting and a criminal investigation had been launched.
"Ascertaining the type of dog involved in this attack has been a complex issue," said Temporary Deputy Chief Constable Patricia Gallan of Merseyside Police.
"It has taken some time to complete the examinations and post mortem before we have been able to confirm that it is an illegal type of dog."
Gallan said she was "concerned and very disappointed" that officers had not followed up a warning in February that pit bulls were being bred at the house where the attack took place.
"This is clearly unacceptable and we are sorry that Merseyside Police did not take the appropriate course of action at that time," she said.
"As a matter of urgency we began an immediate internal investigation to establish exactly what led to that call not being brought to the attention of our specialist dog unit."
The matter had now been referred to the Independent Police Complaints Commission.
Nearly 200 illegal dogs were seized or handed over to police in the Liverpool area in the months after a pit-bull terrier killed a 5-year-old girl near the city in 2007.

some Dogs can be unstoppable when they turn bad, there is no reason to have such breeds, most ordinary dogs can be trained and fought off easier if necessary and don't cause as much damage, should they turn bad.

Hell lets not stop at cars lets include all vans lorries trains planes and even ships because they are bigger and ALL kill more than ANY DOG ever has and we cant fight off any of em! PUNISH THE DEED NOT THE BREED! These f*ckers that own and train these dogs should be punished by the law for what they do! It does not happen here in the UK! The owner as in most all cases will get off with a fine and the dog destroyed and that is not good enough! JAIL THE F*CKERS FOR MURDER and see how fast this problem goes away, give em a 50 quid fine and watch it happen again. You talk about fighting off dogs and thats sh*t! I dont want to fight ANY dog off i want the owners to treat their dogs well and train them even better and have them under control!NWpostie wrote:some Dogs can be unstoppable when they turn bad, there is no reason to have such breeds, most ordinary dogs can be trained and fought off easier if necessary and don't cause as much damage, should they turn bad.
I think there is a clear difference between a Dog and an inanimate object don't you think ? one is uncontrollable once it has gone bad , the other can be controlled by switching the ignition off.
You need to think your reply through before going off on one.

Im not going to argue, the only part I disagree on is the difference between an uncontrollable dog and a car cannot be compared directly.
the rest I actually agree, Bad Dog = Bad Owners, you cannot stop a large and viscous dog without outside help, Dogs are pack animals, pecking order is important to them, if one day they decide they want to be the top dog and the owner is in the way, you could not stop a pitbull/rottweiler/akita etc as they are too powerful once they go bad, its usually game over, life endex.
with smaller dogs, you can stop them, slap them down if needed, what is the point of owning a massive powerful potentially lethal dog, unless its to compensate for a tiny penis.

Cars, Vans, bikes by themselves don't kill, its people who kill people, I own two high calibre rifles for sport and target shooting, yet I do not feel the urge to go out and kill people, that's where I feel your analogy falls flat on its face, hence my disagreement.

If its not Guns it will be Knives or boots, hammer, even car or a Dog its still the person doing it not the object itself, most Gun crimes these day are not legally held and is obtained through third party sources, many would not be allowed on a Firearms certificate in the first place, very few legally owned firearms are used in criminal activities as the holder is strictly vetted, you are looking at about maybe 1 in every two years event, illegal firearms numbers in the hundreds and has been used in criminal activities without hesistation same for Dogs, Pitt bull types have been trained up to their dirty work, so its still the person manipulating.
