A SUB-postmaster whose Leeds branch was re-opened thanks to people power has welcomed the Government's community bank' plan as the "last hope" to save the network.
Khalid Hameed, 30, runs the Elland Road branch in Holbeck.
His outlet started trading again last year after an 18-month closure, thanks to campaign spearheaded by the local community association.
Speaking of the plans announced today by Business Secretary Lord Mandelson, Mr Hameed said it was "a good positive step that could save our community services".
He said with people losing trust in the high street banks, and more and more people turning to internet banking, the time was right for post office branches to start offering financial services.
"I wouldn't mind at all, we would love to get more work," he told the YEP.
"We are losing business and customers already.
"We could lose the card account and we have lost some business to Royal Mail's online postage services.
"We are really struggling the moment, although it's a bit better than last year.
"If you look at it now we have 12,000 outlets in the UK.
"People are using internet banking but they like face to face customer services.
"If the Government wants to do this, it's a good positive step that could save our community services.
"It's the last hope to save our post offices."
