Blunder over rubbish collection dates

A ROYAL Mail blunder has led to more than a thousand Hampshire homes receiving cards with the wrong rubbish collection dates printed on.

Environment and health bosses at Test Valley Borough Council arranged for Royal Mail to deliver the cards with the authority's in house magazine Test Valley News but residents in some areas in and around Romsey have received the wrong information about their collection dates between December and November 2010. One Sherfield English resident who received the wrong card said: "There is going to be total chaos as thousands of people in the Romsey area put the wrong dustbins out for collection.."

The householder who did not want to be identified said he was "very surprised" to see that the area of Sherfield English where he lives was listed for recycling collections during the first week of December when the previous week was also recycling materials and the borough council operates biweekly collections.

He added that one of his neighbours received the wrong list while another had the correct dates put through the letterbox.

The man suggested putting the place names at the top of each card in a bid to make sure the mix up doesn't happen again.

Borough council spokeswoman Christine Brown confirmed there had been problems with calendars of collection dates being delivered to the wrong addresses in some parts of the SO51 postcode district.

"We were initially aware of problems with deliveries to 1,700 addresses in parts of Romsey Extra, Sherfield English and West Wellow.

We've now sent out the correct calendars and a letter with them explaining what's happened. We were assured by Royal Mail that only some parts of the postcode district but other areas of SO51 might be affected. It seems we were misinformed by Royal Mail about how many areas were affected.

It would appear that somehow the cards got muddled at Royal Mail's regional distribution centre and Royal Mail has accepted it was responsible and is paying for the mistake to be put right," said Mrs Brown, adding that rubbish collection patterns remain unchanged accept for over the Christmas and new year period.

A Royal Mail spokesman said the matter was being investigated. 2We are very sorry that TVBC has had a problem with our door to door service and we apologise to the confusion cause to residents affected in the Romsey area.

At present a member of our customer services team is in dialogue with the customer on how best to resolve this problem," said the spokesperson.
