Memorial could be in line for face-lift

ONE of the world’s earliest-known monuments to the perils of drink driving could gets its first face-lift in almost 80 years, Llandovery town councillors have learned.

The Mail Coach Pillar, situated on the A40 Llandovery-Brecon road, marks the spot where the Gloucester and Carmarthen mail coach – with its driver drunk at the reins – plunged over a 121ft precipice shortly before Christmas 1835.

The monument was erected by the Royal Mail as a warning to its drivers of the perils of drink driving.

Edward Jenkins had driven the coach at a furious pace on the wrong side of the road until he met a cart coming in the opposite direction.

Ever since, the pillar has stood as a warming for boozed-up drivers.

But Llandovery mayor Helene Lovell was recently horrified to discover the old monument in a poor state of repair.

Now Llandovery postmaster Robin Ennion is pressing the Royal Mail to spruce it up for the first time since 1930.

“I’ve written to the chairman of the Royal Mail Group and he has passed on my letter to Post Office Estates,” Cllr Ennion told colleagues. “I do think the fact the Mail Coach Pillar was restored by Post Office officials in 1930 means there shouldn’t be a problem in getting them to do so again.”

I doubt RM will do anything it took 95 years for the last face lift.
So keep on moving, moving, moving your feet
Keep on shuf-shuf-shuffling to this ghost dance beat
Just keep on walking down never ending streets
