Re: Briefing report from -Paul Fisher Area Delivery Rep for TA.
I have said before, that it is easy for someone to spout about longer delivery spans when they are NOT actually delivering.
The difference between the two delivery system and the single delivery is that there was a scheduled break between, then IPS and I seriously doubt anyone ever had a second delivery of two hours. On a winters day when your hands are so cold you cannot feel your fingers, when it is raining and you are wet through to the bone you don't want to be walking the streets for 4 hours - if anyone wants to talk about that they should be prepared to do it - not just for a day but for day after day.
To hear these "professional" union people talk, they are as bad as Royal Mail - except it is Royal Mails job to increase productivity and it is the unions job to protect us. Royal Mail in the leaked document consistently said absorption, absorption and the Union are saying, increase delivery time, increase D2Ds and yet NEITHER party KNOW with any certainty what the sequencing machines effect is going to have.
The pair of them are brokering a deal for circumstances that haven't yet happened and may be in the offing for three years or more - so my advice would be to sort out the existing problems of bullying, harassment and inequality of work loads.

Personally, I'd rather work Mon-Fri with Sat an Sun off every week, and let anyone who wants to work on the Saturday be paid double-time, and charge a premium to anyone wanting their mail delivered to pay for it.

Re: Briefing report from -Paul Fisher Area Delivery Rep for TA.
do you or anyone in the union have any idea at all as to just how long it would take to prep a walk that was 5hrs long. even if it was postcode sorted you'd be hard pressed to prep it in 3hrs let alone 2hrs.dingo wrote:I do not think either Royal Mail or the CWU have really explained the scale of change that is being disucssed in the national talks.
Take walk sequecing the fact is that not only will that decrease IPS and Prep but it will deliver 40% of the work to a delivery office considerably later then now and in some cases where the office is located a considerable distance from where walk seqencing machine is it could be as late as 10 in the morning. The bussiness case for walk seqeuncing does not allow for the first 60% of work to be sorted first.
So the dilema for the union is this if work is going to be coming in later and you have protenially lost up to 20% of your workload maybe more in some cases then how do you protect full time jobs.
On an 8 hour day it will be come more differcult even given the fact that Royal Mail now plot deliveries on 3.5 hours first to last point of delivery and then biuld replensihment time on top so in reality walks are longer then 3.5 hours.
The shorter working week is vital for the future but is it something people want to fight for ? Well we have had two 90 mins reductions since 1988 and countless policies on obtaining a 35 hour working week.
Yes the CWU have looked at suggustions on the SWW do we collaspe meal reliefs to increase hourly rates. The Union did this under the profesional drivers agreement. There are pro and cons on this point, the pros are that a lot of members simply work their break in deliveries offices now so we would be increasing the hourly rate , the downside is that it would encourage a lot of members not to take breaks at all.
Now in terms of longer spans well we use to under 2 deliveries have a 2.5 hour first delivery and a 2 hour second delivery per day. I do serious believe that there will no agreed span but the shorter the span the less of a full time job you will have.

i'm not out to bash our union but i didn't strike for 18 day's so they could do a deal on 5hr deliveries. our walk's are 3.5 hrs now to get them to 5 hrs we would need to lose every 3rd walk. and have 2 walk's instead of 3. that would mean in our office 1 postman in every 3 lossing their job. this union is not being paid by me and other's to do deal's like this.

as i have said before mate Hayes, Ward and the Pec are more interested in the labour party than they are in representing the guys that pay their f*cking wages US if they love the labour party that much they should resign from the union and join the labour party instead for my opinion you cannot be both as it is a conflict of interest ... it just goes to show how out of touch senior union figures are from the membership when they cosy up to mandelson/brown/Johnston and co the same guys that have done more damage to royal mail and post men than the previous tory regime

The union is not looking at 5 hours deliveries.
Some offices have agreed 4.5 hours in certain part of the UK. Remember Royal Mail have 140 million pounds to spend on car derived vans where all walks in the future apart from those nearest to an office will be based on car derived vans.
Now what span would you want 3.5 hours has led to parts of the country having over 40% part timers. In London we have just over 2% in deliveries which is why they say that London is less effericent than other areas and why they say they need to cut more full time jobs.
Remember in some parts of the UK they prep two walks before taking their own walk out and this is in 8 hours thats without walk sequenceing hence why they want longer spans now.

So to make up for lack of prep you add more delivery time but then you'll need to less dely staff because there will be less deliveries?

Yes that would seem obvious wouldn't it. But not to those who don't work in a DO. What some of those who are negotiating don't realise is that the number of part timers, and in my office it is a third, work overtime already to complete their duties, so though they are contractually part time they are in effect part time plus and Royal Mail will not increase their contractual hours. What you have to wonder is if those who think a 5 hour delivery span is feasible if they would be prepared to do it. If some people can prep two deliveries and then deliver one - quite obviously their deliveries are NOT big enough and if that is the case in London then I can quite understand RMs position.themaze617 wrote:'Remember in some parts of the UK they prep two walks before taking their own walk out and this is in 8 hours thats without walk sequenceing hence why they want longer spans now'

You do wonder that if London has only 2% part timers, how many of those are buy downs and if there has been a decline in work how they have managed to miss out on all those wonderful changes we have been subject to?

The more you post the clearer it become's the CWU has no idea as to how this job works.dingo wrote:The union is not looking at 5 hours deliveries.

Re: Briefing report from -Paul Fisher Area Delivery Rep for TA.
reading your post dingo i'm not sure who's side you're on. our rep told us all to stop using our car's so we've stopped. he told us to work safely so now we do. we go out on van's we don't carry over weight bag's. most day's now we work to our finishing time or almost to time. we don't go over our time we cut off. and we've backed the strike 100% in our office. just tell me straight have we done all of this so the union can do a deal where we have longer walk's no paid break's and later start time's. are you telling us we have no choice and that the union is no longer willing to fight.dingo wrote:The union is not looking at 5 hours deliveries.

Yes,They do that in my office but they prep one walk INSTEAD of IP and then prep and deliver their own walk
and thats why there was 160 trays of flats left unsorted this morning and we already have Walk Sequenced Mail.

same in our office those that prep 2 walk's don't come on to the IPS that's why we're on the IPS for over 1hr most day's now because there's only a few of us on it,fishtank wrote:"Remember in some parts of the UK they prep two walks before taking their own walk out and this is in 8 hours thats without walk sequenceing hence why they want longer spans now."

about 1hr 15mins and we were told to prep our walk's or we don't get out in time to finish. think we left about 1 box of pre sorted and around 3 or 4 boxes of unsorted work for every walk.fishtank wrote:kwikpost wrote:same in our office those that prep 2 walk's don't come on to the IPS that's why we're on the IPS for over 1hr most day's now because there's only a few of us on it,fishtank wrote:"Remember in some parts of the UK they prep two walks before taking their own walk out and this is in 8 hours thats without walk sequenceing hence why they want longer spans now."
