It's the old 'divide and rule' crap. Bosses have used it for generations. It used to be someone elses race, nationality or religion. Royal Fail now have it down to an individual city and the lynch mob are there to join in, as usual.

Arn't you the lucky one! Plenty of people at my office are losing their jobs and another round to come in the New Year. You keep believing the London bullshit that RM are feeding you ;liar and no I'm not in London.
Same in my office. :evil/mad We have already been given 2 sets of business plans next year that are based on losing more jobs and a push towards part time for those that remain. We were also told that there will be no going back on the revision we saw in September and another revision to take out even more is planned for the second week of January, this is all part of the 2009 business plan.

RM are playing a waiting game, the PEC signed off an interim shafting - the real shafting starts straight after Christmas. London should not be left to fight this alone, they've done more than their fair share of fighting, and I'm fed up with numpties coming on here and telling us "were all right jack". Your office may be okay, but they aint finished with you yet!
i think you'll find you weren't alone the strikes actually started up here first in Scotland and Irvine has had 17 or 18 strike days and glasgow and edinburgh Mail Centres have had quite a few strike days as well

If you go back and read my early posts from a couple of years ago I warned about this.

Royalmail spent a few years after SDD/MCR & TR removimg non-ops roles. It was clear that Ops would be hit again a few years down the line and that is what began again in 2007 under modernisation plans.

The problem here is as stated before whether you see RM as a service or a business. The government and senior mgmt see it as a business which needs to stand on it's own two feet. If revenues have fallen as they have done in the last 12 months at a pace not seen in recent times and there is no expectation that volumes will pick up any time soon (if ever) then with less revenue one needs to remove cost to balance the books. This becomes harder if a: There is no compulsory redundancy b: With a strong union.

At the moment there are non-ops people refusing to leave even though they've been made surplus as they feel they cannot afford to leave.
There are Ops people who feel they cannot absorb more work with either physically harming themselves, or losing the basic principle of a fairs day pay for a fair days work.

Something has to given on either time, cost or quality. Either mail is delivered less frequently or later using part-timers, prices go up to pay for the pension deficit to be filled and/or pay for the higher per unit costs, or the USO needs revising (removal of collections, and/or frequency of delivery or breadth of delivery).

It seems to me that the strategy of the company at the moment is attempting to deliver all of these and failing on all of them as something has to given.

I am glad I left now as things have only got worse.

Good luck

I hope and hope again we go back out on strike!
I hope R.M. try and split the union too!
I hope that all union members stop bickering between ourselves!
I hope that Christmas 2009 will be cancelled!
As far as i am concerned R.M can stick their 2007 agreement up their ars*ole. It does not work and should not be allowed to!
I am f**kng raging at the CWU for even agreeing to the 2007 proposals in the 1st place, but we, as a union must stick together!
Every CWU member knows we were sold down the river in 2007.
Work harder,longer,faster,do this,do that,implement this,implement that1
For what?
So that Royal mail can be sold on the cheap, thats why!
Royal Mail MCs GOODBYE!
Royal Mail DOs Say hello to TNTs new way of working!
Goodbye to the CWU!

Are we on the verge of a Christmas postal strike?
I f**k*n hope so! Revolution or be Slaves your decision!

We were allowed to vote on a s**t deal back in 2007 with a carrot dangling in front of it, greed took over and "we, the union" stupidly voted for it - how them up top ever allowed this to be voted on in the first place still remains a mystery to this day.
Since then we have seen many full-timers and long-serving people leave, meaning less support for the union. A fair number of part-timers know full well they can't survive on a part-time wage so run around like headless chickens and do any overtime that's offered. They are not interested in fighting and losing money (maybe some are, but in my office many aren't) - RM has won on that count.

I'm sorry if I upset some stalwart union-ites but IMO the union is dead, they no longer have the guts to stand and fight properly - proven by stopping strike action with some interim agreement that we all know is a stalling tactic. Any new agreement is the same s**t just re-worded! RM has won, again.
A lot of people are pissed off about the union halting strike action without a proper agreement, such are the feelings that some people want to quit the union or won't support any further strike action - why go on strike again only for the same thing to happen or worse still keep striking well into Spring, Summer even, I doubt a lot of people would survive that much wage-battering.

OK we still could get strikes before Christmas, not enough to cause as much trouble had we remained on strike though. Bbut I doubt I'll be out this time, I can't afford to keep striking, my wage is all we have and whilst I would like to see RMs plans crushed I fear this will never happen and I am not putting my house and family at risk for a union that 'thinks' it can beat RM - they had their chance, they threw it away (along with any respect I had for them)
If you are in a similar position but do go back on strike long-term, good for you, I wish you the best of luck.

And before anyone says I will benefit from any deal struck - no, we've got absorption, we've had job losses, we've got longs and shorts - everything that RM wants but with nothing in return. RM will not back down on any deals already introduced, so no I won't benefit, I'm already a slave.
Job losses will continue (through natural wastage mostly) or by management finding excuses to sack people (sick levels, major on the job mistakes etc) - and yes we've already had that round of losses in our office too.. Part-timers will be an ever increasing force within RM and I doubt they'll have the time, energy and will to fight.

I would like to make one comment here,i have read over some of the comments and i can understand some of the fears that people have about going back out on IA but you should all be aware that the union is its members, its not just a bunch of people sitting in London at CWU head quarters its us,you know the postal staff all that work across the UK in all the offices.
Managers have gone ahead and done what ever they needed to,they have had their day but what some of these sad managers have failed to admit is they are scared to because if they destroy what was one of the best services this country had they wont have a job either, yes the top bosses will as they will slim of and find another hole to crawl into and get payed loads of dosh but they will anyway but the lower level managers have some thing to worry about,TNT might come and buy bits but they wont want the managers of this business they have their own already in place who are already moulded.
So to put the finer point on it,it is us who have to stand as one,if we believe in us but for all that are not sure think about what your job means its not just a wage packet being a postie its a way of life.
