THIEVES have stolen thousands of pounds worth of jewellery and other high value items from a Royal Mail van in Southampton.

The locked van had been parked near to the Bon Marche store in the city centre when the crooks struck.

The parcels were due to be delivered to businesses in and around the Above Bar area, but while the postman was making other deliveries in the area, the thieves raided the vehicle.

As well as jewellery the items are thought to include foreign currency and mobile phones. The exact value isn’t yet known but is thought to run into thousands of pounds.

The incident happened between 10 and 11am on Tuesday, November 17, but details have only just been released by Hampshire Constabulary.

Detectives are are asking for anyone with information to come forward and help. They also want to hear from anyone who is offered any of these type of items for sale which they are suspicious of.

Anyone who can help should call Detective Constable Marriette Ladd at Shirley CID on 101 or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.

A 46-year-old Southampton man was arrested in connection with the theft but he has since been released on police bail until January 13 2010.

They've most probably watched the driver perform the same routine time and time again. I'm only surprised a few more cars haven't been broken into.

How he never got turned over is beyond me.

But these type of duties, and i'm sure there are loads of them up and down the country should be 2 man jobs, but, this is RM we're talking about!

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

One of our town vans got broken into a few years back, managers said it would be a 2 man duty from then on, it lasted all of a week
So keep on moving, moving, moving your feet
Keep on shuf-shuf-shuffling to this ghost dance beat
Just keep on walking down never ending streets

This is my office and the poor old driver is suspended. I suspect that is exactly what happened as he delivers to all the jewellers and banks and one of the jewellers has been raided several times. But whats the answer? theyd never double up on the duty, we,re struggling now with so many part time and this must be a problem in every major town. Thank god im not a driver, the specials i take now are enough
