Are we on the verge of a Christmas postal strike?

Despite hopes that the Royal Mail and unions had buried the hatchet and were looking to the future with regards to a long-term agreement, sources close to the Communication Workers Union have let it be known that talks are stalling and concern is growing. It seems as though, in private, the Communication Workers Union is looking to threaten further industrial action in the run-up to Christmas, something which all parties had been looking to avoid. So what has gone wrong?

Sources close to the union claim that the Royal Mail is continuing to stall over peace talks and if no progress is made over the next few days then we could see further problems in the short term. Quite why the Royal Mail is allegedly stalling over peace talks remains to be seen because ultimately the company and the union need to resolve various issues as soon as possible. Royal mail can ill afford to give away business and the unions can ill afford to put the long-term job security of their members at risk.

The UK government will be dismayed to find that talks are stalling, if the information is correct, and we may see further pressure exerted on both sides.

Are you a union member? Do you know what the word "union" means? Or does the concept of overcoming a stronger foe by working together pass you by like it did to Lord Halifax?

What a load of cobblers. Once again a so called journalist conveniently forgetting quite important facts; 60,000 jobs lost in recent years with another 30-50,000 planned to go under 'modernisation'. Management slash and burn and the blame the workforce, twisted logic ,Orwellian doublespeak, still it obviously works on some of our more simple citizens.

Pinewood you may all just be working up to your time in your office with changes but over the years we have had to endure many revisions in our office the last one during the summer so we already have up to 800 drops . This means that lapsing introduced in the last summer lasted about 3 days as some people ,not many but enough to make it count, stopped using cars. Im lucky to make 15 minutes even on a light day as people prepping duties means theres too few on the ips and the fact that i do all flats means i cant make up much time but as one post the other day said people would sell there own parents to get oiut early and take more lapsing with them than they should. And who has to do the extra asap the same people. Its unworkable as wed have to do overtime to take part of the lapsed duties, and then the rogue managers start bullying and saying youre the failure and threaten with willful delays etc. Our managers have backed off but even the dom admitted hes just waiting for the national situation. By the way our office also voted for strike action and was told to wait until the national strike,so of course weve been flooded with 20 hour contracts since who either have to do docket or book or give their own time if their daft and we felt let down by the union but theres no other option than making our voice heard. One size does not fit all. These changes are being applied regardless of level of service. Im working untill nearly 2.45 now and ive got bisuness at the end of my delivery that arent big enough to get couriers and are quite rightly pissed off.As if we want to be out there gone 2.30

There are lots of posties in London who have been working all their paid hours since the SDD agreement in 2003, but managers are trying to bully and harass them into doing absorption, which they cannot do unless they go over their time, fine if you want an hour or two's OT every day, not so fine if all a postie wants to do at the end of their shift is to go home and put their aching feet in to a dish of hot water. There has to be a line drawn where workload is concerned, and I for one will be striking.

Being in the union is making sure ALL are ok not just you!! and as previously posted are you sure you are doing ALL of phase 4 or just being cushioned to cause divide and conquer remember divided we fall, UNITY is STRENGTH!! I am surprised how many members expect the union to ALWAYS be there for them when they are in trouble but only need to SUPPORT when it suits them!!!!

Same in my office. We have already been given 2 sets of business plans next year that are based on losing more jobs and a push towards part time for those that remain. We were also told that there will be no going back on the revision we saw in September and another revision to take out even more is planned for the second week of January, this is all part of the 2009 business plan.

RM are playing a waiting game, the PEC signed off an interim shafting - the real shafting starts straight after Christmas. London should not be left to fight this alone, they've done more than their fair share of fighting, and I'm fed up with numpties coming on here and telling us "were all right jack". Your office may be okay, but they aint finished with you yet!
