CWU London Division calls for national strike action

Postal Workers’ Dispute - London Update 20.11.09

At this afternoon’s meeting of the London Divisional Committee it was reported that after some six meetings with London Royal Mail they are still refusing to honour the full terms of the interim agreement.

All they want to do is make more cuts and introduce “absorption” without re-engaging about the changes they have already imposed with regard to job cuts, revisions, part-timers, belated hours, rest day hours, 4-day weeks etc in line with the agreement.

It is clear that London Management want to continue to punish, bully, intimidate and harass our members for daring to stand up to them and defend our terms and conditions.

The London Division has therefore unanimously agreed to demand that the national union, when it meets on Tuesday, announce national strike action. This is a national agreement they’re breaking, it’s a national union, therefore it requires national action.

As a rep you try telling the members of my DO that London are having problems so where going out, won't happen, support for the last strikes was good people have now lost all hope in the CWU, with Christmas around the corner strikes will not be supported, I can see London and maybe Scotland out on there own like last time with the rest of us joining in after Christmas. Depressing times ahead  :cry

If the rest of the country don't support London now you can forget after xmas as RM will have want they want a divide and conquer scenario and it will be game over.

Don't go piling on a guilt trip here, we came out and was told to go back as the interim deal was all that - well it wasn't, we knew it wasn't but the instruction stood. We aren't puppets or muppets to be manipulated at someone elses' whim, the divide and conquer scenario you paint is not of our making but of HQs - you will either be supported or not, and I guess not - but you don't just need to persuade us you need to persuade the PEC and the CWU. When asked we supported, the people who let you down weren't on the picket lines.

If all the posters who still think this is a London or Scotland issue just look above if they think this plan is not going to affect them they will be in for a big shock. If all the CWU HQ detractors (you know who you are)think that it’s time to withdraw their support for the union then Royal Mail will have got exactly what they wanted (divide and conquer) they were even good enough to leak there plans to us. So stop blaming HQ all the time and get your colleagues up for a x-mas fight instead of spreading this CWU HQ let everyone down bullshit.

Do you seriously believe that the CWU hasn't seen that document or something very akin to it? What they haven't done is to be honest with the membership. The blame lies squarely with the CWU and I will not be preached to by supporters of the worst union leadership I have ever seen. Those parts of the wish list I have highlighted in red are already in operation here. What YOU must realise is that many thousands of postmen and women are already operating these systems like it or not and it's mostly not and they are asking what's in it for US - local re-negotiation? don't make me laugh if it was negotiable it would have been negotiated in the first place.

The sad thing is anyone calling for strikes now find themselves in a strange position,
Out of touch with the majority of members who have little appetite for strikes for what,a stronger "interim agreement",
And most definately out of touch with CWU HQ and the PEC who will be mortified at the idea of more strike action.
I don't think anyone could question the fact that fresh strikes would carry less support than before and this would leave us looking weaker and weaker in the eyes of Royal Mail.I think even the most militant among us would understand this and i'm sure Billy and Dave do too.

if london want to go on strike, you are welcome- dont bring me into it - our area changes and revisions have been in for months now!! can you tell me why i should go on strike
yes i have a voice too,
at the start of the action everyone was banging the drum - we have to support the cwu leaders to broker the best deal -
so why the change of heart let the leaders carry on to get the best deal,
patience is a virtue
