MURDER BID: The man was knifed in MacDowall Street

A PHONEY postman is thought to have carried out a crazed knife attack in Johnstone.

Police are hunting for the man after he stabbed Allan Grant, 26, multiple times leaving him in a pool of blood.

He was seen leaving the block of flats on MacDowall Street with a knife in each hand and wearing a Royal Mail uniform.

However it is believed that he does not work for the company but was merely posing as a postman to gain access to the building.

Police are treating the attack as attempted murder.

The suspect is described as 6ft tall, athletic, slim build, wearing dark clothing and he was carrying a satchel.

He was seen going into the building at around 8.40am.

Witnesses then saw him leaving a couple of minutes later before returning at 8.50am.

This time he was clearly seen on CCTV with a pick axe using it to lever the door open before disappearing inside.

It is thought that a confrontation happened inside the close before the attack happened.

Allan was visiting his friend's flat when he was stabbed.

He was rushed to Royal Alexandra Hospital in Paisley with wounds to his chest and arm.

He is said to be in a serious but stable condition.

Detective Sergeant Jim Mimnagh is the officer in charge of the investigation.

He said: "Our enquiries are at an early stage and we have not yet established a motive for the attack.

"I would appeal to anyone who may have seen the suspect outside the flat, either before the incident or afterwards, to come forward.

"It happened in a busy area and there would have been a lot of traffic passing by at the time.

"I would therefore urge motorists and passengers to contact the police if they have any information which might help us with our enquiries."

A Royal Mail spokeswoman said: "As far as we are aware, no Royal Mail employee is involved in this incident and Royal Mail is happy to help the police with their enquiries."

The incident happened around the corner from Johnstone Police Station and the busy Johnstone High Street.

One concerned shop owner told the Gazette: "We saw the man being taken out by an ambulance and we thought he had a heart attack. Then we were told someone tried to kill him.

"It's pretty scary to think that this person is still roaming the streets."

Witnesses or anyone with information is asked to contact Johnstone CID on telephone number 01505 404000.
