Weymouth customer's plea to stamp out Royal Mail waste

A DISGRUNTLED customer from Weymouth has accused the Royal Mail of wasting money and resources after he received a ‘Christmas card’ from the business.

Retired probation services officer Ted Page says he can’t understand why the cards, which contain customer information for the Christmas period, were sent out at all.

Mr Page said the information the cards carry is normally available elsewhere and worries that the cost of sending out the cards will be handed on to Royal Mail customers.

His comments followed recent strikes by post office staff in Dorset and across the country.

Mr Page, of Brunel Drive, Preston, said: “I’ve had quite a good quality Christmas card from the Royal Mail but all it basically does is give you the final dates for posting first and second class mail before Christmas.

“For an organisation that is in the throes of having strikes because of staffing and cost-cutting, it seems strange that they’re sending out these cards to thousands, if not millions, of their customers.

“This information is normally available elsewhere for free.”

Mr Page, who worked at Weymouth Magistrates Court before retiring, said he was worried that the cost of sending out the cards will be handed on to Royal Mail customers.

Mr Page also pointed out that the Christmas cards’ return address is Sunderland.

A spokesman for Royal Mail said: “Royal Mail and its people are now focused on delivering a great Christmas for all of our customers.

“Many people find it invaluable to have this information at their fingertips at this time of year.”

Because they only give the same replies, they're not allowed to deviate from the prepared script.
